UA Upholstery Shop Makes Masks for Employees Working on Campus

In an effort to keep UA employees safe, the furnishings and design department’s upholstery shop is making protective masks for those who are currently working on campus during limited business operations.

The upholstery team of Susan Brothers, Stephanie Lewis and Brian Cross are working throughout the week to stitch masks. Each mask takes about 15 to 20 minutes to make.

The crew, which normally reupholsters furniture upon request, will continue to make masks until materials run out. If a surplus is established, the University will explore ways the extra masks can benefit the campus community.

“It feels good to use our skills in a time of need,” said Lead Upholsterer Susan Brothers. “It’s a wonderful feeling of service to our community.”

UA upholstery shop staff has used a variety of materials for masks, including medical-grade fabric and t-shirts.

Because this year’s Bama Blitz campaign was postponed and t-shirts promoting the event were already printed, the Office of Annual Giving gladly donated its stock of 1,300 t-shirts to support the effort.

“We postponed our event out of respect for our alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff whose lives are being impacted by COVID-19,” said Mary Lawhorn, director of annual giving. “Repurposing the Bama Blitz t-shirts is a great way to help the UA community.”
