Construction begins on new Tutwiler Residence Hall in Tuscaloosa

Construction has begun on the new $150 million Tutwiler Residence Hall on The University of Alabama campus. The new 365,000-square-foot dormitory will replace the existing Tutwiler Residence Hall, adjacent to the site. Construction is set to be complete by mid-2022. This new facility will be the third residence hall built on the UA campus over a 100-year time span honoring Julia Tutwiler, an education and prison reform advocate.

Tax proceeds to benefit dual enrollment

Today, Mayor Maddox announced the Elevate Dual Enrollment Scholarship Program. It’s part of the elevate Tuscaloosa plan. A high school senior may take up to six fully funded hours of college credit at either The University of AlabamaShelton State, or Stillman college. The scholarships will be available starting with the class of 2021.

Alabama colleges in top 20 nationally for online degrees, U.S. News says

Auburn University, Troy University, UAB and the University of Alabama all had programs ranked in the top 20 nationally in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs rankings, released Tuesday. The University of Alabama’s master’s-level nursing programs in family nurse practitioner, nursing administration and leadership and overall nursing program were ranked in the top 20 nationally.

The University of Alabama’s Courtney Peterson was part of a team that studied the effects of intermittent fasting on obese men. One group was asked to eat only within an 8-hour window of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the other was allowed to eat within a 12-hour window of between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Peterson tells the New York Times her team saw positive results in a group of adults who ate between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s shown to reduce the amount of fat in the liver, which is a risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” she says.
