Beginning January 2020, undergraduate merit scholarship recipients transitioning to full-time status in The University of Alabama Graduate School or School of Law can apply unused semesters of their merit scholarship toward their advanced degrees.
This change allows UA students to move immediately into their advanced studies upon completion of undergraduate degree requirements.
While certain undergraduates have been able to roll over undergrad merit scholarships for a number of years, this change covers all scholarship recipients, not just Presidential, National Merit or Tutwiler.

Though a second major or a minor can be a valuable addition to a résumé, an advanced degree (i.e., a master’s, doctoral, specialist or law degree) can move students more quickly into the senior ranks of their career paths.
UA encourages merit scholarship recipients to speak with their department and/or the Graduate School and School of Law about how to make the best use of their eight-semester scholarship.
Know the policies
Eligible students must:
- Complete the “Scholarship Use for Graduate School Request” form on the Admissions/Scholarships tab in myBama during the semester they plan to graduate from undergraduate studies.
- Enroll full time as a degree-seeking graduate or law student in the next available semester of entry for their program following graduation (excluding summer).
- Use their scholarships only for main-campus graduate programs.
If a student’s residency status changes between their undergraduate and graduate/law studies, the scholarship will also be adjusted. That is, an out-of-state scholarship will be adjusted to the corresponding in-state award, based on the criteria for the year in which the scholarship was originally awarded.
The combination of any tuition-limited Graduate/School of Law financial support (fellowships, assistantships, scholarships, etc.) and an undergraduate merit scholarship cannot exceed the cost of tuition. Students may request to defer undergraduate merit scholarships to a later semester.
