UA’s Recycling Efforts See Significant Increases, Positive Impact

The University of Alabama’s recycling efforts are not only good for the environment but good for business as well.

In the fiscal year 2019, one ton of recycling materials brought in an average of $261, a 30% increase over the previous year.

By the numbers:
• Tons of recycling diverted from the local landfill: 1,523.87, an almost 6% increase.
• Revenue generated from the sale of recycling materials: $191,000, an almost 4% increase.
• Landfill fee savings: $42,668.36, an almost 6% increase.
• Performing in-house shredding services (free to departments): $163,980, a 150% increase.
• Total revenue plus cost savings: $397,720.83, a 37% increase.

In addition, 33,000 pounds of food waste went to the UA Arboretum for composting last year.

Tony D. Johnson, UA senior executive director for logistics and support services, says recycling is a team effort. Its success lies with everyone on campus doing their part.

“By making the decision to recycle and following through with your actions, you contribute positively to our global environment and make an impact on UA’s bottom line,” Johnson said.
