Traveling for the Holidays? These 10 Tips Will Help Keep You Safe

If you are traveling over Thanksgiving or winter break, use these safety tips from UA’s police department.

  1. Always lock your doors and windows when you leave for a trip. If you reside in a suite-style residence hall, lock your bedroom door. Burglars are looking for easy access, and locked doors will slow them down.
  2. When you leave your place of residence, always leave one or two lights on. This gives the impression that someone is home.
  3. When you exit your residence, look around the area to see who may be present. Look for the unfamiliar, especially if you’re placing expensive items into your vehicle. If you have friends or family with you, ask them to help monitor the area so that you are not surprised by a stranger.
  4. If you’re traveling, plan to leave during daylight hours if possible. If a nighttime departure is necessary, make sure you take extra precautions when loading your vehicle. It may be a good idea to load your vehicle before the evening if possible.
  5. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Check your tire pressure and oil. Make sure to fill up your fuel tank before leaving for your trip. Keep a working flashlight in the vehicle. Make sure you have your license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance before leaving.
  6. Check the weather forecast along your route. Be careful if driving through inclement weather such as rain, snow or ice.
  7. Remember to let the people you are visiting know when you are leaving and what time you expect to arrive.
  8. Check in periodically with family or friends while you are traveling.
  9. If you must stop at night, make sure it’s in a well-lit area.
  10. Most importantly, get plenty of rest before your trip. Don’t speed when driving. Never text and drive or drink and drive.

If you should experience trouble with your vehicle while on the road, or become involved in an accident, you should dial 911 from your mobile phone to be connected with the nearest law enforcement agency.
