The major milestone in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library renovations project is complete and was celebrated recently with a ribbon cutting. Now, it’s time to choose names for the new spaces.
The celebration, held in what used to be Room 205, commemorated the latest progress of the scheduled 18-month renovations that began in May.
The newest upgrade to the 80-year-old library is that Room 205 – a popular meeting space at the library – has now been made into two meeting spaces replete with new technology including video walls.
“We host a lot of different folks, campus organizations and departments from all over campus every year,” said Michael Pearce, director of strategic engagement at UA Libraries. “This allows us to host more.”
About 120 people could occupy the original room. Now up to 240 people can.
With Room 205 renovations complete, University Libraries is conducting a contest to name the two new meeting spaces.
By either coming into Gorgas Library and filling out a ballot, or visiting the website, UA students, faculty and staff can vote on one of four name combinations, or suggest their own names for the rooms.
The four name combinations UA Libraries is suggesting are:
- Crimson and White
- Crimson and Houndstooth
- Rotunda and Horizons
- Camellia and Yellowhammer
“People can mix and match the names that are suggested if they want to,” Pearce said. “If there are more people who vote for a certain submission than other ones, we’ll go with that. If we tie we’ll have a runoff election, so to speak.”
The naming contest will end on Dec. 11.
