UA researcher studies sleep impact on obesity and chronic diseases

We often talk about the importance of sleep, but a University of Alabama researcher is studying how sleep can affect not only your weight but other chronic diseases. UA Health science associate professor Adam Knowlden is looking into how sleep impacts us when it comes to our health. As it relates to obesity, he’s trying to find out if lack of sleep leads to obesity or other health concerns. There’s a two-phase part to this study.
Moundville festival showcases Tuscaloosa’s native history

The usually quiet, empty grounds of the Moundville Archaeological Park saw dozens of vendors, thousands of visitors and decades of stories told last week. The Native American Festival, which lasted from Wednesday to Saturday, is an event that is looked forward to all year by staff and tourists. Alex Benitez, park director and University of Alabama museum studies instructor, looks forward to this event each year.
Where Buyers Are Cashing In! The Top 10 U.S. Markets for Flipping

Realtor.com’s bargain-happy economics team found America’s hottest real estate markets for investors, the cities where the highest percentages of home sales are for flipping or renting out, usually after a rehab. They tend to be more modestly priced cities in the Midwest and South, areas that have a larger selection of older, lower-priced homes, strong economies, and population growth creating demand for housing. “Birmingham is one of those markets that’s not really on the radar for those big multinational companies” or real estate investment trusts, says real estate and finance professor Alan Tidwell of the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa.

The University of Alabama and the American foundation for suicide prevention partnered to host the Out of the Darkness Walk. The annual walk is dedicated to suicide prevention and awareness. Our very own Danielle Davis was one of the speakers for tonight’s event.

CSL hosts annual Hands on Tuscaloosa day of service.

Passionate student leaders from the Center for Service and Leadership (CSL) greeted students excitedly when they arrived at the Ferguson Center early Saturday morning to choose a service site for Hands on Tuscaloosa. University of Alabama students had the opportunity to engage in the Tuscaloosa community as part of the CSL’s Hands on Tuscaloosa event. For the annual fall semester day of service, students met at the Ferg at 7:30 a.m., chose service projects to participate in from several options, and took buses to various locations around the community to get involved and give back in different ways.

Michigan drones help crops, fight malaria in Africa

Jon Carroll knew drones were useful. The assistant professor of anthropology at Oakland University had flown them to locate archaeological sites in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Beginning a couple of years ago in southeastern Africa, working on a program with researchers and faculty at Michigan State University through the United States Agency for International Development, Carroll used drones to help manage irrigation and monitor crops in Malawi. Joseph Messina, a former professor at Michigan State and now the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama, spearheaded the agricultural program in Malawi, along with Michigan State professor Sieglinde Snapp.
