Faculty Accolades for Aug. 19, 2019

Dr. Paul Allison, mechanical engineering, was named to the Graphene Academic Council. UA was one of eight universities that joined the Council, which is governed by the National Graphene Association.

Jonathan Cumberland, art and art history, had a poster design accepted to the international juried Stop Hate Poster Show. After three rounds of jurying, 168 posters were selected from 965 submissions to be exhibited at the “2019 Malta Festival Poznań” in Poznań, Poland. A poster design by Cumberland won a juror’s award in Poster Show: Chapter Four held by the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Cumberland had a poster design accepted to the “4th International Poster Biennale Lublin 2019” in Lublin, Poland, with an exhibition at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in June. Cumberland’s illustration for the feature article “Amazon’s Fashion Formula” made the cover of the July 18 issue of Women’s Wear Daily.

Heather Elliott, Law School, has published “Gorsuch v. the Administrative State,” 70 Alabama Law Review 703-732 (2019).

Mirit Eyal-Cohen, Law School, has published “Innovation Agents,” 76 Washington and Lee Law Review 163-259 (2019).

Allison Grant, art and art history, had three photographs juried into the exhibition Home at the SE Center for Photography in Greenville, South Carolina. Seven of Grant’s photographs were featured in a blog post for Pictura Gallery, Bloomington, Indiana, written by one of the jurors of the Greenville show. Grant’s photograph, “Holding Isa,” was selected for the juried exhibition, Photography at the Emerald, in Springfield, Oregon. Her work was also one of 20 artists’ works chosen for MESH, an international juried exhibition of the Vancouver, British Columbia, visual arts organization, Fotofilmic.

Dr. Nader Jalili, professor and department head of mechanical engineering, has been elected to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Mechanical Engineering Department Head Executive Committee for a two-year term, 2019-2021.

Michael S. Pardo, Law School, has published “Confrontation after Scalia and Kennedy,” 70 Alabama Law Review 757-784 (2019). His article “Group Agency and Legal Proof: Or, Why the Jury Is an ‘It’” was featured in the Legal Theory Blog as the “Download of the Week.”

Shalini Bhargava Ray, Law School, has published “Plenary Power and Animus in Immigration Law,” 80 Ohio State Law Journal 13-72 (2019).

Kenneth M. Rosen, Law School, has been appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey to represent the state of Alabama on the Uniform Law Commission, which maintains a critical role in the evolution of state law around the nation. The ULC is notably influential in the commercial law arena, having helped foster the Uniform Commercial Code that provides a foundation for business law in multiple states. However, the ULC works on laws related to a large variety of significant subjects.

Dr. Samit Roy, William D. Jordan Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, will receive the American Society for Composites 2019 Outstanding Research Award in Composites at the 34th Annual Technical Conference in Atlanta.

Tom Wegrzynowski, art and art history, had five paintings selected for the 23rd Annual No Dead Artists International Juried Exhibition Of Contemporary Art, Sept. 4-28, at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans.
