INDEPENDENCE DAY BRINGS MORE TRAFFIC FATALITIES – There are more fatal crashes during the days surrounding Independence Day than during other times of the year, according to an analysis of state traffic records by UA researchers. #BELIKEWALT MERCHANDISE SUPPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS – UA’s Supply Store is selling #BeLikeWalt merchandise to support the Walt Gary Scholarship in Special Education recently created in memory of the longtime Crimson Tide superfan and former employee of 15 years. Gary, who was born with Down syndrome, was a fixture at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility and in the book store. Gary died June 6. The Walt Gary Scholarship in Special Education was established by the Gary family following Walt’s death. The scholarship will provide educational opportunities to those majoring in special education at the University. UA CROSSINGPOINTS LAUNCHES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM — UA is accepting applications for its year-round academic program for individuals with intellectual disabilities beginning in the fall 2019 semester. The CrossingPoints Certificate in Occupational Studies is a three-year, non-degree certificate program that will include six students in each annual cohort. The certificate program will include 24 UA course hours, 10 CrossingPoints specialized hours and 54 internship hours. For more information, contact David Miller, UA Strategic Communications, at 205/348-0825 or david.c.miller@ua.edu.

COPPER WORK AT MOUNDVILLE – UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park will host Saturday in the Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This weekend’s event will include copper work. Each weekend offers a new activity for attending families, including sessions on tools and weapons, flintknapping and pottery firing, among others. The activities are free with paid park admission and are open to the media.
