CrossingPoints will offer 3-year certificate program to students with intellectual disabilities

This fall, six students will inaugurate a three-year academic program designed for people with intellectual disabilities at the University of Alabama. Participants in the CrossingPoints Certificate in Occupational Studies will receive a certificate after completing the program.

Walt Gary loved the Supply Store at the University of Alabama. The way his grandmother, Betty Shirley, remembers it, former UA President Robert Witt once went to visit Gary during his shift years ago. Witt and Shirley’s husband, George, were close friends from his time on the UA board of trustees. In fact, Shirley said Witt saw to it that Walt got a job at the store.

From the sidelines — a labor of love

Whether you’ve seen him furiously tweeting out an update to a game, listened to him on the Sampson County Sports Podcast or read his Pigskin Picks in the Independent, Ryan Carter has been a visible force in this county’s sports landscape for several years. Carter, who has been a contributing columnist for the Independent since 2014, is a 2017 graduate of Mintz Christian Academy. He is currently a junior at the University of Alabama, where he is majoring in news media with a concentration in sports media.

Railroad Crossing crashes on the rise

The government spent nearly 6-million dollars on the ad campaign. It believes that’s money well spent after 270 people died at railroad crossings last year. The University of Alabama says 55 crashes happened in Alabama. Last year the number of drivers who crashed after going around crossing arms hit a 10-year high.

Will anyone restore Biloxi’s Saenger Theatre like they did in New Orleans and Mobile?

To the west, the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans, with its stunning $53 million renovation after Hurricane Katrina, recently hosted the hit Broadway show “Hamilton.” … In Mobile, the Saenger was saved when University of Alabama bought the building the night before it was to be demolished. The city then bought it from the university and a new nonprofit was created to operate the theater.

Tuscaloosa County, including UAPD, get new mental health police officers

There are now a total of seven mental health officers. Each local department has one, including the University of Alabama police department. The officers still perform regular law enforcement duties as well.

Tuscaloosa County Probate Judge discusses recent visit to Paris Airshow

Representatives from state and local governments, the industrial development authority, the chamber of commerce, and the University of Alabama went to the International Airshow in Paris where they met with reps from aerospace and aviation companies.
