Companies Benefit From Combining CFO and COO Jobs, Study Finds

Finance chiefs in recent years have absorbed more duties once assigned to the chief operating officer. An exhaustive new study shows it is a boon. Chief finance officers improve the quality of a company’s financial reporting when they shoulder COO responsibilities, according to the study of more than 3,500 companies over a 16-year period. The study, written by accounting professors at the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma, is believed to be the largest ever conducted on companies in which one person simultaneously serves as the CFO and COO, according to the American Accounting Association, which publishes the Journal of Management Accounting Research.

Cognitive neuroscientist to lead Alabama Life Research Institute at University of Alabama

After a national search, a noteworthy researcher in cognitive neuroscience will lead the Alabama Life Research Institute as executive director. As the first full-time head of ALRI, Dr. Sharlene D. Newman will provide a coherent vision for collaborative life research that embraces the full range of disciplines represented on campus while strengthening the University of Alabama’s research portfolio and profile. “Life research is a signature research theme at UA and needs teams from across campus to address major opportunities and challenges,” said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, UA executive vice president and provost. “Dr. Newman has demonstrated the ability to bring together and lead cross-disciplinary teams, so we are so pleased she will be joining us.”

UA Law professor comments on Jeffrey Epstein arrest

Right now the 66-year-old is being held in New York where he will appear in court tomorrow. Epstein’s attorneys have declined to comment about all of this. Joining me is NBC News correspondent Tom Winter and MSNBC legal contributor Joyce Vance, former U.S. attorney and current professor at the University of Alabama law school. Tom, we’ll start with you in the studio. What do you know about this arrest and his background?

University of Alabama launching bike sharing program

Students at the University of Alabama will have a new transportation option beginning this fall. The school has a deal with Gotcha Mobility to launch an on-demand bike-sharing service on the campus at Tuscaloosa.

Bama Dining to hold job fair

A big job fair is coming up for The University of Alabama’s Bama Dining. There are 100 positions available, that include baristas, cashiers, prep workers, servers, and general utility workers. If you’re interested, it’s Monday, July 8, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ways to beat the heat

Some great ways to stay cool in this humid Alabama heat is by wearing cool clothes, going to a local lake or pool, and of course, drinking plenty of water. University of Alabama student, Michael Collins, says that taking preventative action by bringing water and checking the weather is the way he has found to beat the heat while walking to class.

UA to be represented in World Cup Final

It will be the first time the University of Alabama has been represented in the World Cup final. Former Bama player Merrill Van Doggen is a starter on the Netherland squad. She played from 2012 to 2014 and she is pretty pumped to be in a World Cup final.

Manslaughter charges dropped against woman who miscarried after being shot

Montre D. Carodine, a law professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, said she wasn’t surprised by the D.A.’s decision to drop the case. “We both cried. Then she said, “Thank you.'” “Prosecuting someone for being the victim of a violent crime is not only alarming – it signals an intent to target and criminalize black pregnant women.”

And yes, yes, they were conducted at the University of Alabama in the USA. It is difficult to force people to feed only on celery, so the scientists used the lizards for the experiment.

How our dollar sign came to be — maybe?

Ever wonder where the dollar sign originated? While reviewing the Cecil Whig articles from June 1869, I came across a small feature in the June 19, 1869, edition of the paper that piqued my curiosity. In an article titled “The Curious Origins of the Dollar Sign,” University of Alabama history professor Joshua Rothman writes of a man named Oliver Pollock who traded with France, Spain and the soon-to-be Americans during the Revolutionary War. Pollock was instrumental in arranging trade during the war that gained American independence and even provided a great deal of funding to further support.

Renovation Projects Continue at University of Alabama

The University of Alabama has a series of interior renovations occurring this summer in addition to the new construction, such as the university archive facility and new parking decks. The $7 million renovation of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library has begun with enlargements to restrooms and upgrades to the elevators to address core infrastructure needs and support future development. The Java City coffee bar on the ground floor is also being renovated.

UA professor talks July 4th skin protection tips

Many of you are getting ready to head out to the beach or lake to celebrate the Fourth of July. When you’re out in the sun, you’ll want to keep your skin protected, but experts said there’s more you should do to make sure you and your family are protected from the harmful UV rays. University of Alabama Family Medicine Physician and Professor Dr. Alan Blum said putting sunscreen on is only half the battle when it comes to keeping your skin safe in the sun. Some sunscreen is better than none, but according to Blum, it’s more important to try and watch what times you go out in the sun.
