Faculty and Staff Accolades for June 24, 2019

Dean Mark E. Brandon, Law School, co-authored “The Finch Initiative: Reconnecting Law Students to Rural Alabama,” in 80 Alabama Lawyer, 176-180 (2019).

Dr. Shatina Chen, department of human nutrition and hospitality management, was nominated to receive recognition through the Extra Credit program in Parent & Family Programs. The Extra Credit program is an initiative that gives parents and family members the opportunity to nominate faculty and staff members who have made a unique difference to their UA student.

Dr. Amy Ellis and Dr. S. E. Jung, College of Human Environmental Sciences, received the 2019 Julie O’Sullivan Maillet Research Grant Award, which is funded by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. This grant is given for a research project that aims to demonstrate the value of dietetics professionals on the health of the public or demonstrate the evolving role of dietetics professionals in the profession.

Mirit Eyal-Cohen, Law School, has published “Innovation Elements,” in 76 Washington and Lee Law Review, 163-259 (2019). 

Dr. Deidre Leaver-Dunn has been named associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. On July 1, she will replace retiring associate dean Dr. Mary Kay Meyer. 

Kristin Maki, department of clothing, textiles and interior design, was appointed by the Interior Design Educators Council to serve as abstract review co-coordinator from 2019-2021. Maki will manage all aspects of the review process for written scholarship submissions to the organization’s annual conferences. IDEC is the professionally recognized association for interior design educators in North America.

Dr. Kathryn S. Oths, department of anthropology, co-authored “Are the undocumented deserving? Health workers’ views of immigrants in Alabama,” 30(2) Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, 820-840 (2019).

Pamela Payne Foster, College of Community Health Sciences, was selected as a member of the next cohort of mid-career aspiring leaders for the second MSI Aspiring Leaders Forum by the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.

Larry Stanfel, professor emeritus in Culverhouse College of Business, had a prize-winning short story produced as a ballet by the Coastal Ballet Academy. “The Princess of Evighet” premiered at the George Meyer Center for Performing Arts in Gulf Shores.
