Autherine Lucy Foster honored at UA

The first black woman to enroll at the University of Alabama received an honorary degree 63 years later. Autherine Lucy Foster was first accepted to the university in 1952. Her acceptance was rescinded because she was black. After fighting that decision, Foster finally enrolled in 1956, becoming the first African American to attend a white school or university in the state of Alabama. Three days afterwards, she was expelled due to death threats and riots on campus.

Researchers quicken drug discovery method via zombie-like cells

Researchers are using zombie-like cells that behave normally on the outside, but are filled with magnetic particles inside, to screen potential drugs from natural products. Discovered at The University of Alabama, the method could quicken a laborious task that slows drug discovery, according to findings in a paper published in the journal Nanoscale.

Several weeks ago, a meteorologist in Atlanta reportedly received death threats for interrupting The Masters for tornado warnings. The station, CBS46, was showing both golf and the warnings in a split-screen format. Multiple tornadoes wound up touching down that day in the Atlanta area …For that, we reached out to Dr. Laura Myers at the University of Alabama. She is the director of the Center for Advanced Public Safety and has researched this very topic.

To date, efforts to obtain President Trump’s personal income tax returns have gone nowhere. It is clear the president will never release them voluntarily, and the Treasury Department has stonewalled the House Ways and Means Committee’s request for them, despite a federal statute that allows Congress to review any taxpayer’s income tax returns. Survivors of Lee County storms get place to call home

Just a little over two months after the devastating storms that killed 23 Lee County residents and left many people without homes, organizations in the area are helping to give back a sense of normalcy … Last Saturday the organizations brought together local volunteers and athletes from Auburn University and the University of Alabama to construct the walls of the homes. A project manager was assigned to each site, and the work continued on.

Slocumb High School Student chosen to participate in UA’s Rural Health Scholars Program

A Slocomb High School junior has made it into an elite group. He’s been chosen for the University of Alabama’s Rural Health Scholars Program. Edwin Olea will be spending his summer learning about health practices in rural areas, like his hometown, Slocomb. The idea is that students in the program will take what they learn and bring it back home. Olea was one of just 25 rural health scholars selected.
