RESEARCHERS LOOK TO EXTEND SHELF LIFE OF NUTRITIOUS VEGETABLES – While helping small farms in Alabama, researchers at UA and the University of West Alabama hope to provide agricultural solutions that assist a class of nutritious vegetables called microgreens to last longer in supermarkets and kitchens. UA RANKS SECOND NATIONALLY AMONG PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES FOR NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR ENROLLMENT — UA ranks second nationally among public universities, and fifth among all universities nationwide, in enrollment of National Merit Scholars for the 2018 entering class. UA enrolled 185 new National Merit Scholars in its freshman class, ranking it number one in the state of Alabama and second nationally, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation annual report. LEONARDO SET TO MUSIC — Marking the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, UA’s University Chorus, University Singers and the Prentice Concert Chorale will present the Southeastern premiere of composer Jocelyn Hagen’s “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci” at 7:30 Tuesday, April 23, at Moody Concert Hall. A chamber orchestra consisting of UA faculty and students and a visual presentation will accompany the performance. A pre-concert talk with Hagen and poet Dr. Hank Lazer will begin at 7:05 p.m. The composition is a nine-movement work co-commissioned by UA’s School of Music and the Prentice Concert Chorale as part of a consortium of university and community choirs. Tickets are available online or at the door. Cost: Adults, $10; seniors, $5 with ID; and students $3 with ID. STUDENT FILMS ABOUT JUSTICE, INJUSTICE TO DEBUT – UA’s department of journalism and creative media will host the 13th annual Documenting Justice film screening at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa. The screening is free and open to the public and features short documentaries by students who communicate about issues of justice and injustice in Alabama through nonfiction filmmaking. The students produced the documentaries as part of a two-semester course co-taught by award-winning filmmaker Andrew Grace, director of the Documenting Justice program and instructor in the department of journalism and creative media, and Rachel Morgan, creative director for Birmingham’s Sidewalk Film Festival. GOLF FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS THERAPEUTIC SERVICES AT RISE CENTER – The RISE Tournament of Champions benefiting UA’s RISE Center will be held April 25-26 at NorthRiver Yacht Club. The tournament is a four-person scramble, handicaps required, with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days. Registration for the golf tournament starts at $2,500 for a four-person team. Morning and afternoon prizes that include televisions, paddle boards and golf accessories will be awarded to the top four teams with the best gross and net scores. COMPUTER SCIENCE TO HONOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS FOR COMPUTING SUCCESS — UA’s computer science department will honor high school girls April 27 for their successes in computing. UA will host the 2019 National Center for Women in Information Technology, or NCWIT, Aspirations Award celebration for the north Alabama region. It will take place in H.M. Comer Hall and will honor 60 award recipients including 57 students and three teachers. Recipients are chosen based on an application that is judged both locally and at a national level to decide national awardees. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPETE IN CYBER CONTEST – Students from seven high schools across Alabama will compete in a “Jeopardy-style” cyber competition April 27. The event, scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the South Engineering Research Center, room 1059, involves challenges such as data hiding, deciphering and cryptography. The event is organized by Dr. Travis Atkison, UA assistant professor of computer science.
