UA LANDS $2.85 MILLION GRANT TO BOOST MATH EDUCATIONThe Master Teacher Fellowship grant will strengthen content knowledge, teaching practice and leadership among math teachers in the greater Tuscaloosa area. UA is recruiting early-to-mid career math teachers in grades six through 12 in Tuscaloosa to participate in professional development, which will provide annual teaching supplements of nearly $13,000 and up to 18 credit hours that can be applied toward a master’s degree or education specialist degree at UA. The goal is for participants to achieve national board certification, become instructional experts in their schools and serve in curriculum leadership roles in their schools, districts and at the state level. For more information, contact David Miller at 205-348-0825 or david.c.miller@ua.edu

RESEARCH SHOWS BEST METHOD TO HELP ENDANGERED WOODPECKER – The best methods to help an endangered woodpecker thrive in the Talladega National Forest in Alabama are installation of artificial homes and controlled burning in forests, according to research from UA. ENTREPRENEURS COMPETE FOR $100,000 IN TUESDAY EVENT – UA students and Tuscaloosa residents will pitch business ideas at the Edward K. Aldag Jr. Business Plan Competition Tuesday, March 26, at the Bryant Conference Center on campus. These entrepreneurs are competing for more than $100,000 in cash and in-kind support. BATTLE OF THE ROBOTS – K-12 students from Alabama will compete in the ninth annual Alabama Robotics Competition from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Bryant Conference Center. In the event, hosted by the computer science department within UA’s College of Engineering, the students will compete by programming their robots to navigate a series of obstacle courses autonomously. The keynote speaker is Dr. Chris Crawford, UA assistant professor of computer science, who will speak on brain-robot interaction and brain-computer interfaces for novice programmers.
