UA TRANSPORTATION STUDY MAPS OPTIONS FOR FUTURE OF STATE ROADS – An analysis of Alabama’s roads and bridges by UA researchers provides future scenarios for the state of transportation infrastructure that vary based on funding. The report, “Addressing Alabama’s Transportation Infrastructure: Roads and Bridges,” is designed to inform state leaders. UA TO STUDY CORRECTION’S ASSESSMENT PROGRAM FOR WOMEN – UA researchers will soon begin a four-year, $1.9 million validation study of the Alabama Department of Corrections’ Women’s Risk Needs Assessment process at three prisons across the state. Researchers from UA’s department of criminology and criminal justice will study how WRNA is associated with particular likelihoods of misconduct or recidivism after release and how to ensure fidelity. LAW STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION — A UA Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law moot court team recently won a national competition in New York, defeating more than 150 other teams and landing UA its first championship in the event’s history. The team won preliminary rounds and then defeated William & Mary, South Texas College of Law, Iowa and the defending national champions Northwestern, completing an undefeated run. Team members include  Lindsey Barber, of Birmingham, Cory Church, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Anne Miles Golson, of Montgomery.  The team is coached by Mary Ksobiech, assistant dean of students, and managed by Josh Kravec, a second-year law student. NEW BUILDING SUPPORTS INNOVATION, ENTREPRENEURS — The EDGE, a high-tech facility designed to support entrepreneurial collaboration and innovation in west Alabama, will have its grand opening Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. Officials from the City of Tuscaloosa, along with leadership from UA and community partners, are expected to attend. Located at 2627 10th Ave. in the center of Tuscaloosa, The EDGE is about 1.5 miles from UA’s campus. A collaboration between UA, via the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute, the City and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, The EDGE is both a workspace and a catalyst for business networking. BLACK HISTORY MONTH — UA’s Black History Month celebration will include innovative and informative events. UA Crossroads coordinates the activities each year; for more information, go to https://crossroads.ua.edu/black-history-month/. Included in the activities is University Libraries’ exhibit “Celebrating the Life of Frankie Taylor Thomas; The University of Alabama’s First African-American Faculty Member.” This year is the 50th anniversary of the hiring of Thomas, the first African-American faculty member at UA. Thomas was hired in 1969 as an instructor in University Libraries. The exhibit will feature other accomplishments. The exhibit will be up throughout February on the first floor of Gorgas Library. REGIONAL AUTISM NETWORK AT UA TO HOST LUNCH AND LEARN – The Regional Autism Network, or RAN, will hold a free community lunch-and-learn focused on various topics related to autism spectrum disorder Feb. 12 at the Belk Activity Center off James Harrison Parkway. Dr. Angie Barber, chair of UA’s department of communicative disorders is the featured speaker for the luncheon, which begins at 11 a.m. Participants must RSVP at uaran-lunch-and-learn-autism101.eventbrite.com. The lunch-and-learn is part of a bolstered West Alabama regional office of RAN, a state-drive initiative to provide professional training and technical assistance for Alabama residents seeking diagnostic services and autism-specific resources.
