It’s time to rethink coverage of school shootings

SCHOOLHOUSES ARE BECOMING fortresses equipped with surveillance cameras and bulletproof desks, with teachers serving double duty as armed guards. Children are being pushed into terrifying drills to prepare for the possibility of a mass shooting that is statistically unlikely … The potential harm of excessive coverage—especially that which focuses primarily on the perpetrator—isn’t theoretical, Adam Lankford, an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Alabama, says. Such coverage is “facilitating and fueling subcultures with people who are disturbed and troubled,” according to Lankford, who co-edited a special issue of the journal American Behavioral Scientist examining implications of media coverage of mass killers.

University of Alabama Moot Court Team makes history by winning national competition

A University of Alabama Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law moot court team recently won a national competition and in doing so made some history. The team of Lindsey Barber, Cory Church and Anne Miles Golson won the 69th Annual National Moot Court Competition up in New York and in doing so became the first time a team from the University of Alabama has won the event.
 
Tech company was chosen as anchor tenant for the Edge

Camgian Microsystems has opened its Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Tuscaloosa. The Starkville, Mississippi-based technology company marked the grand opening of its Tuscaloosa center on Feb. 6 at the Edge, the business incubator at 2627 10th Ave … Camgian was chosen as the anchor tenant for the Edge, a brand-new $11.6 million, 26,300-square-foot facility, which was created as a collaborative project between the University of Alabama, the city of Tuscaloosa and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.

UA student athletes visit VA Medical Center

University of Alabama student athletes taking time off the field today to show their support to some of Alabama’s real heroes. “Athletes at the University of Alabama left campus Thursday to spend time with veterans in the Tuscaloosa area. Volleyball player Cidavia Hall and track athlete Alize Ford brought smiles, cheerful conversation and Valentine’s Day cards to the VA Medical Center. The pair visited veterans getting treatment and those living at the VA.

Inspired by Power of Pink initiative, Alabama gymnast volunteers at local cancer center

This extra step doesn’t cost Shea Mahoney any deductions. After touring the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center last year with the rest of her team, the University of Alabama gymnast asked if there was any way she could come back and lend a hand. Mahoney is the only UA student-athlete who regularly volunteers at that wing of the DCH Regional Medical Center. She does so at least once a week, twice during the offseason.

Students have more UA Dining Dollars Options

Some downtown Tuscaloosa restaurants are getting a big boost in their business. It’s all thanks to University of Alabama students using their dinning dollars to purchase meals off campus. The owner of Ajians Sushi located on University Boulevard says the past ten days his business has nearly tripled. UA students have been waiting in long lines to purchase their dinners. The business owner tells CBS 42 he had to hire more workers to keep up with the demand.

Seminar touts using YouTube as business tool

Google’s Pamela Starr had a message for small business owners during a seminar held Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Baldwin County Association of Realtors in Robertsdale … The free seminar, “Sharing Your Story Through Video By Google,” was presented by America’s Small Business Development Center through the University of Alabama, in cooperation with the BCAR and Baldwin County’s five Chambers of Commerce, the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Bay Minette; Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Robertsdale; Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, Fairhope; South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Foley; and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, Gulf Shores.

ELHS student attends Girl State

Marlo Grace Harrison of East Lawrence High School was selected by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 25 to represent the Auxiliary at Girls State, which was held in June at the University of Alabama. Harrison attended the American Legion and Auxiliary annual Christmas Dinner, where she spoke about her experience in Tuscaloosa. Girls State is a leadership opportunity for high school girls and is held at the University of Alabama each year.
