Dothan community members come together for International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and members of the Ruth Remnant Ministry and Temple Emanu-El made sure Dothan took notice. The United Nations organized the holiday and set it for January 27th in honor of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The event featured a guest speaker from the University of Alabama, who mentioned how ethnic relations in the world today could still use some improvement.

Cincinnati now part of national study to help communities prevent veteran suicide

With 24 years in the Air Force including tours of duty in Afghanistan, Rusty Mardis says he knows the pain and isolation that is fueling a nationwide increase in the numbers of military veterans dying by suicide … The study, Operation Deep Dive, is run through the nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership working with researchers from the University of Alabama. Funding of $2.9 million comes from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.

Women CEOs are more likely to be dismissed, even when the company is doing well

Women CEOs are 45% more likely to be dismissed than men CEOs, a new study finds. Even when a firm is performing well, women are more likely to be dismissed from the CEO position. The researchers think that may be the result of implicit gender bias. Women who sit at the top of the corporate hierarchy have, presumably, shattered a piece of the proverbial glass ceiling. But research suggests that even women CEOs may still face obstacles to success. According to a new study by Vishal K. Gupta at the University of Mississippi, Sandra C. Mortal at the University of Alabama, Sabatino Silveri at the University of Memphis, Minxing Sun at Clemson University, and Daniel B. Turban at the University of Missouri CEOs who are women are more likely to be dismissed than CEOs who are men.

UA Law School holds Frank M. Johnson Symposium

The University of Alabama School of Law hosted a symposium today, to honor the life and legacy of judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. Judge Johnson was a federal court district judge in Montgomery from 1955 until his death in 1999. He was famous for dozens of landmark rulings that virtually desegregated all state institutions in Alabama, plus securing voter rights for all of Alabama’s citizens.

OLLI to hold lecture on Alabama’s Political History

Sharon Shelton with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute stopped by the studio to talk about their upcoming events. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will be hosting a lecture about Alabama’s political history. John Archibald, a columnist for AL.com and the Birmingham News, will be speaking at the event. The event will be held at the Hoover Public Library on Jan. 30 from 1-3 p.m. and is free to the public.

EXPERIENCING DEMENTIA THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY

A California company has utilized virtual reality technology, giving people a simulated experience of what it is like to live with dementia. CEO of Embodied Labs Carrie Shaw spoke with University of Alabama Honors students about this technology at Caring Days. When using a special headset, the Embodied Labs’ program lets people see and hear what it’s like to have dementia.

UA sets date for A-Day

The University of Alabama announced Friday that the 2019 Golden Flake A-Day spring football game will be played on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. television coverage will be announced at a later date.
