United Way surpasses $4 million fundraising goal

The United Way of West Alabama surpassed its goal of $4 million for its 2018 fundraising campaign … The University of Alabama set a record for its annual drive in support of the campaign by collecting $469,483.

Event honors legacy of judge who helped desegregate South

The public is invited to attend a symposium honoring the legacy of an Alabama federal judge whose rulings helped desegregate the South. The Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. Centennial Symposium is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the Bedsole Moot Courtroom at the University of Alabama’s law school, 101 Paul W. Bryant Drive. People can register to attend at www.law.ua.edu/judgejohnson.

UA Center for Economic Development holds book drive for the Black Belt
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Jan. 23
The University of Alabama’s Center for Economic Development is holding a book drive for schools in the Black Belt. The department says that many of their libraries are under-funded. Folks can donate gently used books or new books. Their goal is to raise about 30,000 books for students in K-12 schools in the Black Belt.

U.S. Space & Rocket Center was Alabama’s most visited tourism attraction in 2018
WTVY (Huntsville) – Jan. 23
More than 849,981 people visited the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville last year, ranking it first among state attractions that charge admission, state tourism officials said. The Birmingham Zoo ranked second with 543,090 and the Huntsville Botanical Garden was third with 353,841 … University of Alabama home football games played at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa had the highest attendance for sports destinations with 609,250, followed by 591,236 at Auburn University.

Reese’s Senior Bowl celebrates 70th all-star game

On Jan. 7, 1950, the first Senior Bowl all-star game kicked off in Jacksonville. Auburn’s Travis Tidwell was named the Most Valuable Player as he threw for two touchdowns in a 22-13 win for the South squad … The University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Band will perform in pregame and halftime festivities for the seventh time.

Student parents adjust education to fit family needs

A nursing major at Shelton State Community College and a former biology student at The University of Alabama, Amanda Daidone credits her change in career path to the birth of her son, Sam … The UA Title IX office provides accommodations for pregnant students as well. Beth Howard,  Title IX coordinator, said they aim to help these students fulfill their responsibilities and succeed in their courses.

2016 Brewster Graduate Allison McCarthy Making a Name for Herself in the Astronomy Community

Allison McCarthy graduated from Brewster High School just a few years ago, but she is already making a name for herself in the astronomy community. The 2016 Brewster graduate is currently studying Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

While graphene could be used to improve the strength and mechanical properties of a variety of automotive parts, it is not yet fully economically viable for most applications … Also, in 2017, a research team from the University of Alabama successfully fabricated a lighter Chevrolet Camaro car hood using graphene.
