SUCCESSFUL BOOK DRIVE HELPING SCHOOLS IN ALABAMA’S BLACK BELT

A book drive for community schools with limited library resources in Alabama’s Black Belt region aims to provide one book for each child … “We have a wonderful group of people in our center that have been working on this project for many years,” Nisa Miranda, the director of the University of Alabama’s Center for Economic Development, said.

Jr., including people in Alabama, a state that has become a landmark of the Civil Rights Movement … “Martin Luther King’s dream is about bringing people together and having unity,” Jessica O’Neal, a University of Alabama student, said. “And being a member of the University of Alabama as a student and having that diversity there it just feels like I am actually living the dream.”

Allison McCarthy Makes a Name for Herself in Astronomy Community

Allison McCarthy graduated from Brewster High School just a few years ago, but she is already making a name for herself in the astronomy community. The 2016 Brewster graduate is currently studying Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Kay Ivey recently proclaimed this “Alabama School Choice Week” and thousands of families will celebrate reforms created by the Alabama Accountability Act, including scholarships so low-income parents can transfer their children from under-performing schools … A state-commissioned study conducted by the University of Alabama’s Institute for Social Science Research found that students using the scholarships performed about as well, on average, as their public school peers.

Study shows number of opioid overdose deaths higher than fatal wrecks

Startling stats on a recent study about drug overdoses. One University of Alabama professor said the odds of an accidental opioid overdose are higher than the chances of a person dying from a car accident.

Study: Mortgage discrimination hurts gay male couples

Gay male couples – especially black gay couples – are at heightened risk of discrimination by mortgage lenders nationwide when they are seeking to purchase a home, according to an analysis published in the University of Chicago Law Review based on empirical data disclosed under federal housing law. (University of Alabama Professors Griffin Edwards and John Shahar Dillbary, the two authors of the report, did not respond to requests for comment on the information.)
 
Nationally acclaimed poet and professor Robin Behn to visit ISU Feb. 8

On Feb. 8, Idaho State University Creative Writing will host nationally acclaimed poet and professor Robin Behn, who will give a poetry reading and a talk on teaching high school and college creative writing at 5:30 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Bengal Café. . . . Behn is a full professor who teaches in the Master of Fine Arts Program for Creative Writing at the University of Alabama.
