UA Names Dean of Students

Dr. Jamie R. Riley has been named The University of Alabama’s assistant vice president and dean of students effective Monday, Feb. 25, 2019.

Riley currently serves as the executive director and chief operating officer of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

“Dr. Riley brings a wealth of student-focused experience to our Office of the Dean of Students and to our Student Life leadership team. He has a proven track record of advocating for students and for encouraging their co-curricular learning experiences. In addition, his recent tenure at Alpha Phi Alpha has given him experience managing a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders. His leadership will be invaluable for our students,” said UA Vice President for Student Life David L. Grady.

“I am thrilled to join The University of Alabama,” said Riley. “I have always been committed to working with students as well as campus and community partners to ensure that all programs and services are accessible and inclusive and that the campus community is safe and vibrant. I look forward to providing the same types of experiences and even more for the dynamic and energetic UA community.”

Prior to taking the top role at Alpha Phi Alpha, Riley served in various student affairs and diversity and inclusion roles at Johns Hopkins University; The University of California, Berkeley; Longwood University; The University of Georgia; Morehouse College; and Western Kentucky University. He also has teaching experience at The University of Maryland, College Park; The University of California, Berkeley; Longwood University; and The University of Georgia. He earned his doctorate in counseling and student personnel services from The University of Georgia and both a Bachelor of Science in health care administration and planning and a Master of Education in leadership from Tennessee State University.
