Faculty Accolades for Dec. 17, 2018

Dr. Wendy Castenell, art and art history, was elected to the board of the Nineteenth Century Studies Association, an interdisciplinary association for the study of nineteenth-century world cultures.

Dr. James J. Cochran, professor and associate dean for research, Culverhouse College of Business, received the 2018 President’s Award from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. INFORMS is the leading international association for operations research and analytics professionals. The award recognizes and encourages important contributions to the welfare of society by members of the profession at the local, national or global level.

Jonathan Cumberland, art and art history, had a poster design selected for the international juried competition, “Poster for ____.” His poster was recognized in the top 10 of the climate change category. The competition received 5,863 posters from 45 countries.

Allison Grant, art and art history, had art work juried into “Storytelling | Fall 2018” in Latitude’s Open Call Gallery in Chicago. Her work will be on display in their Chicago gallery and online.

Dr. Subhadra Gupta, metallurgical and materials engineering, has been named a 2018 AVS Fellow for her research in thin film and vacuum technology for optical, electronic and magnetic devices leading to commercial applications in the semiconductor and data storage industry. The 2018 award was given to 13 out of 4,500 AVS members worldwide.

Dr. Mukesh Kumar, civil, construction and environmental engineering, received the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman Award for outstanding services, achievements and contributions. Presented by the Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society of India to about 60 nonresident Indians per year out of nearly 16 million living outside of India, the award recognizes their accomplishments while also strengthening the bond between nonresident Indians and India.

Bryce Speed, art and art history, was selected for three juried exhibitions this fall: “Painting in the 21st Century” at Site:Brooklyn Gallery in Brooklyn, New York; the Northern National Art Competition in Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and the Small Works National Juried Art Exhibition in Palatine, Illinois. He also had a solo exhibition, “New Paintings and Drawings,” at Eichold Gallery, Spring Hill College, in Mobile.

Dr. Doris Sung, art and art history, published a chapter, “Redefining Female Talent: ‘The Women’s Eastern Times,’ ‘The Ladies’ Journal,’ and the Development of ‘Women’s Art’ in China, 1910s-1930s,” in the book, “Women and the Periodical Press in China’s Long Twentieth Century: A Space of their Own,” edited by Michel Hockx, Joan Judge and Barbara Mittler (Cambridge University Press, 2018).
