UA Students Win Big in National Opera Competition

For the second consecutive year, The University of Alabama’s Opera Theatre has won second place in the National Opera Association’s Opera Production Competition.

Dr. Paul Houghtaling, associate professor of voice and director of the UA Opera Theatre, said the Opera Production Competition is one of the biggest opera competitions in the nation. He noted the chamber opera’s all graduate-student cast performed a complex, dark and brooding piece about a murder mystery.

“We won for a short chamber opera we did in October 2017 called ‘Letters from Quebec to Providence in the Rain,’ composed by Jeremy Gill,” he said. “We were going for first place but got second.

“But 84 schools entered this competition so we are grateful. It’s a nice production that keeps our opera program in the national spotlight and getting national attention.”
