What GM’s layoffs could mean for Alabama’s auto industry

The auto industry is still trying to process the effect of yesterday’s planned layoffs by GM … There are some dangers though. Bharat Balasubramanian, a professor of mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering at the University of Alabama, said the strategy could prove dangerous if fuel prices increase or autonomous technology outpaces pickup trucks. Balasubramanian was formerly vice president of group research and advanced engineering at Mercedes-Benz.

A holiday home run for Sprayberry students

Members of the University of Alabama baseball team pitched in Tuesday to help students in the Sprayberry Education Center program get in the Christmas spirit with a party. UA players helped the students design ornaments and hang their creations on a Christmas tree. Students in the special needs program attend classes at the Lloyd Wood Education Center in Northport.

A little more than a year after his arrest, this may be the end of the line for Paul Manafort … For some Russiagate true believers, the answer seems obvious: Manafort has continued to be untruthful with prosecutors because the alternative would be even worse. “Everybody who lies to Mueller gets called on it, so he had to know that Mueller would catch him,” University of Alabama law professor Joyce Vance told the New York Times Monday. “So the question is, what was he hiding that is worse than going to jail for the rest of your life?”

UA’s music school presents concerts

The University of Alabama’s School of Music will present some concerts this week to end the semester. Each performance will be held in the concert hall at the Moody Music Building, 810 Second Ave., and tickets cost $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors and $3 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.music.ua.edu.

Swann Room photo studio opens its doors

The morning of the Swann Room’s grand opening Saturday, photographer Katherine McClure did something she could not have done before debuting the elegant photo studio in downtown Prairie City: arrange portrait shots for large extended families after holiday get-togethers … Pointing to the piece, McClure said, “My dad is a concert organist and this is the concert organ at the University of Alabama. I heard him play this when I was seven.”

HHS graduate part of UA Homecoming Court

Jordan Watkins, a 2015 Hoover High School graduate, was part of the University of Alabama’s homecoming court in October 2018. She and other court members were guests of honor at the homecoming parade, bonfire and halftime of the university’s homecoming game.
