UA engineering professors create sensor to prevent hot-car deaths

A pair of University of Alabama professors has devised a monitor meant to help prevent accidental hot-car deaths and injuries among children left in vehicles. “The idea is that if there is someone or anything that breathes that is left in the car unattended, that the driver or the owner of the vehicle would get a notification when the sensor picks up that somebody is in there,” said Tim Haskew, head of the department of electrical and computer engineering.

New Marshall director: “My dream has come true”

After Hartselle native Jody Singer learned last month that she had been named the next director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, her first call was to her husband. “I just said, ‘My dream has come true,’ ” Singer recalled saying to Chris Singer and her son, who was with him. “And then, of course, I called my mom.” … Singer was part of the last class, in 1979, of then-Morgan County High School, which has since been replaced with Hartselle High. She earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Alabama.

Jimmy Wales: Enthusiasts of Encyclopedia who Succeed with Wikipedia

Wikipedia is currently the largest open encyclopedia site in the world. Behind his success was Jimmy Wales, who founded the 5th most visited site according to Alexa.com in 2001 … Jimmy then entered Randolph’s prep school and studied in finance at Auburn University. After graduating, he took a doctoral program in finance at the University of Alabama.

SAFE HOUSE BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM CELEBRATES 16 YEARS

Depressed children 6 times more likely to have skill deficits, MU study finds

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that as many as 2 to 3 percent of children ages 6 to 12 might have major depressive disorder … “Using latent profile and transition analyses to understand patterns of informant ratings of child depressive symptoms,” was published in the Journal of School Psychology. Co-authors include Daniel Cohen, assistant professor at the University of Alabama; Rick Ostrander, associate professor at John Hopkins University.

Campus cards move to mobile wallets

Soon, your college-aged kids may no longer need to carry a wallet full of plastic cards with them when they roam around campus. Instead, they’ll be able to unlock campus buildings, buy lunch or supplies and flash their student IDs using just their mobile phones – or their wearable devices …Right now, only students at Duke, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alabama will have access to Apple Wallet’s student IDs.
ASPA conventions ‘priceless’ for students

DUAL EXHIBITS HONOR MOTHER OF ALABAMA PHOTOGRAPHY GAY BURKE

Students, colleagues and friends impacted by their larger than life teacher and fellow artist reminisced Friday at opening night for a pair of exhibits highlighting her life. Gay Burke, considered the mother of Alabama photography, died last year, but her work lives on through her own art and that of her many students …Burke had the honor of being the first female professor working at the University of Alabama’s department of art and art history, and spent more than 40 years as a teacher.

UA homecoming features bonfire, pep rally and parade

The University of Alabama will roll out the crimson carpet for students, alumni and fans during homecoming week. Activities began Sunday with the 30th annual Roll Tide Run and a kickoff party on the lawn outside the Ferguson Center. The week will culminate Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium as UA faces the University of Missouri in the annual homecoming football game.

The University of Alabama Dance Marathon program received a recognition plaque on the Pillars of the Community display at Children’s of Alabama. Since its start in 2011, the UADM program has cumulatively raised more than $1 million for Children’s of Alabama.
