Betsy DeVos to visit Rise Center and Shelton State
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 4
U.S. Secretary Betsy DeVos is scheduled to visit Tuscaloosa on Thursday morning as part of her “Rethink School” tour. A news release from the U.S. Department of Education says DeVos will visit the Rise Center to view its blended early childhood and special education environment and Shelton State Community College to learn about its career and technical programs.

School of Social Work studies human trafficking

Kaylee Newton, a graduate student in the School of Social Work, has worked with individuals who have been trafficked. She said the issue is more prevalent in Alabama than people think. With a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, The University of Alabama School of Social Work is conducting a study on human trafficking.

Gov. Ivey leads groundbreaking on $325 million Amazon facility in Bessemer

Governor Kay Ivey led a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of Internet retail giant Amazon’s construction of a technologically advanced fulfillment center in Bessemer that will employ 1,500 Alabama workers once the sprawling facility is fully operational in 2019 … Projections show it will contribute $203 million annually to Jefferson County’s economic output, while adding $123 million to the county’s GDP, according to the study prepared by the Center for Business and Economic Research in the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse School of Business.

The University of Alabama has launched a new program allowing students access to their campus ID cards via Apple phones and watches. As of Tuesday, students, faculty and staff are able to load their campus ID card onto iPhones and Apple Watches with Apple Wallet and a specialized app.

With the midterms fast approaching Voice of America (VoA) notes Democrats are running on gun control and suggests this may be a winning strategy … Reports using the FBI standard measure show that America witnessed less than 100 mass shootings during the years 1966 to 2012. Mother Jones quoted the University of Alabama study showing 90 mass shootings during that 45-year period.
