The University of Alabama announcing tonight they raised $224 million in gifts and pledges during the 2017-2018 school year. That’s $100 million more than last year and the school says the money came from 62,000 donors.

Lyft partners with The University of Alabama to provide discounts
CBS 42 (Birmingham) – Oct. 22
The University of Alabama has contracted with the ride-sharing company Lyft to provide discounts to UA students, faculty and staff. Those applicable will receive a 15 percent discount when traveling within a two-mile radius of the bus hub, located on East Campus Drive. The discount will apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

University of Alabama team wins $1 million grant to develop tool to combat opioid epidemic
Alabama Today – Oct. 22
Across the country, opioid abuse has reached epidemic levels, severely affecting communities and straining public safety resources. The Institute of Business Analytics, or IBA, a research unit at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business, has received an approximate $1 million grant from the Office of Justice Programs at the Justice Department to develop a data-driven tool to help officials better understand the scope of the opioid epidemic in Alabama and how to intelligently allocate resources.

UA and Auburn to work together on Diesel Fuel Project

Alabama and Auburn, they are actually teaming up. This time, researchers from both universities are working on a fuel project. Auburn got a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to work on an additive to make diesel fuel burn cleaner. Researchers from University of Alabama will help test that blend.

Put down that cell phone! Alabama lawmakers are getting closer to passing hands-free driving laws.

Hey drivers! Put down that cell phone because Alabama is on the verge of passing hands-free driving laws in March 2019. Admit it, your cell phone is your best friend. At work, at home, at the store and in the car, your phone is always right there with you … According to a study by the University of Alabama, the number of reported cases where distracted driving caused the crash increased by 20 percent in 2016 over 2014. Not good!
Five Academic Researchers Awarded Seed Grants by The Gary and Mary West Foundation to Advance Palliative Care Research

Five palliative care researchers from universities across the country have been awarded a total of $50,000 in seed grants for projects aimed at improving care for seniors experiencing serious or life-limiting illness, or strengthening support for family caregivers … Hyunjin Noh, MSW, PhD, School of Social Work, the University of Alabama – $9,962 for her project, “Palliative Care Knowledge, Attitudes and Needs Among Caregivers of Cognitively Impaired Older Adults.”

Apple Launches University ID Card Feature on iPhone

Apple has added support for contactless student ID cards in Wallet. Earlier this month, students at three universities were among the first to enjoy the convenience of using their iPhone and Apple Watch to complete certain tasks around campus, such as gaining access to buildings and purchasing food on campus … Students at Duke University, the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma can now leave their physical wallet behind has they can access their student ID’s through their iPhones’ Wallet feature.

Rebuilt earthworks land Oxford on historic mounds trail

Nine years ago, the city of Oxford almost bulldozed a set of earthworks built by the people who lived here before the arrival of Columbus. On Thursday, city officials will celebrate those mounds as one of the area’s tourist attractions …  “A lot of people have heard of Moundville, but they aren’t familiar with the other sites,” said Brian Rushing of University of Alabama’s Center for Economic Development, which organized the trail initiative.

A look at Tuscaloosa Halloween events open to the public

University of Alabama athletes welcomed young trick-or-treaters Monday during the 16th annual Halloween Extravaganza at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility. More than 2,600 people attended, exceeding last year’s record total by at least 500, and more than 250 Crimson Tide athletes participated.

UA Athletes hold annual Halloween Extravaganza
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Oct. 22
The Halloween extravaganza event took place west of the Coleman Coliseum in the Hank crisp indoor facility. The event allows families to come and interact with University of Alabama athletes from several different sports teams. Each sports team at the event hosts a station with a fun Halloween activity that incorporates skills from their sport. Many of the children wore costumes anywhere from princesses to super heroes, and even Big Al made an appearance.
