University of Alabama Raises $224 Million

The University of Alabama says it raised more than $224 million in gifts and pledges during 2017-18 school year. The school said in a news release the money came from more than 62,000 donors.

Men in leadership gain from psychopathic behavior, women punished

People with psychopathic tendencies are slightly more likely to be a company boss, but a new study finds men are allowed a pass for those inclinations while women are punished … “Aggressive behavior is seen as more prototypical of men, and so people allow more displays of that kind of behavior without social sanctions,” said Dr. Peter Harms, associate professor of management at The University of Alabama. “If women behave counter to gender norms, it seems like they get punished for it more readily.”

Human Trafficking in Alabama

So just how bad is the problem? The University of Alabama School of Social Work found 617 potential victims of human trafficking statewide in 2017. Chris Lim, the university’s human trafficking project director says more than half of them were minors. Worse, he says, that’s only about 10 percent of the victims actually out there.

AU, UA team up for $2M project to make diesel fuel burn cleaner
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 20
Auburn University researchers are working on a bio-based additive to make diesel fuel burn cleaner as part of a $2 million U.S. Department of Energy project that will see researchers at the University of Alabama help test the blend. The $2 million project led by Auburn is part of about $10 million in funding from the DOE for the co-optimization of engines and fuels. The department is providing $80 million for 42 projects to support advanced vehicles technologies research.

UA hosts Opioid Epidemic Forum

Researchers at the University of Alabama want the community to get involved in this fight to stop the drug abuse. The University of Alabama is hosting an expert panel on the prescription opioid epidemic that impacts people across the state but also folks living right here in Tuscaloosa. UA researchers say doctor shopping, and too much over prescribing for short term pain is a big part of the opioid abuse problem. Lawyers, law enforcement, policy experts, drug task officials and medical doctors will all discuss possible solutions to the growing opioid issues plaguing our area.

Habitat for Humanity Homes survive hurricane winds

The Habitat Tuscaloosa homes are also built to that same standard, but go a step even further by adding a tornado safe room in every home. This summer, the University of Alabama College of Engineering tested the safe room walls by firing wooden 2x4s out of a cannon into a safe room wall. Habitat for Humanity in Tuscaloosa has built 74 homes for families in west Alabama.

Local student finalist in prestigious science competition

Alabama team travels to Tokyo, seeks stronger bonds with Japanese companies

One in three children in Alabama don’t know where their next meal will come from. The University of Alabama Public Relations students hosted a hot dog eating contest, which helped raise awareness about childhood hunger across Alabama.

2018 Texas Rose Parade: The Duchesses & their escorts

UA Million Dollar Band performs in Chattanooga

Paul W. “Bear” Bryant Museum celebrates 30th Anniversary
