Three Universities in U.S. Launch Contactless Student ID Cards on iPhone and Apple Watch

Following a preview at WWDC 2018, Apple today announced that students at three universities in the United States can now add their student ID cards to Apple Wallet to get around campus using just an iPhone or Apple Watch … Namely, starting today, students at Duke University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Oklahoma can now add their ID card to the Wallet app on iOS 12 and watchOS 5 and use it to pay quickly and easily for laundry, coffee or lunch, and even get into their dorms, the gym, or the school library.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kicks off

Auburn University and the University of Alabama are using their rivalry to help fight hunger. The schools’ 25th annual food-drive competition kicked off today. From now until November 15th, the two schools will collect non-perishable food items to benefit food banks in their respective communities.

Take ’em to the bank: Million Dollar Band embodies rich tradition at Alabama

Saturdays during the fall semester at the University of Alabama are steeped in traditions. White tents populate the university’s Quad along the main drag through campus for tailgaters, flags and plastic shakers wave in the air, the school’s crimson color washes over the campus and “Roll Tides” abound.  But at an hour when most people are waking up to prepare for the game, the university’s Million Dollar Band, is rehearsing and preparing to carry on traditions that make Saturday a game day in Tuscaloosa.
 
How Dr. Acoff inspires interest in materials science

Jackson State University physics grad Derrick Stokes is a new breed of materials scientist. In the photo taken during his time at The University of Alabama, where he was a Bridge to the Doctorate fellow, he is seen working with Dr. Viola Acoff, professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, in a laboratory. Thanks to Dr. Acoff, Stokes is one of six students from historically black colleges who have earned graduate degrees in materials science and engineering as a result of a special program at The University of Alabama.
 
UA works to fight flu by providing flu shots

We learned today that studies show that college students don’t always think they need a flu shot. Folks at The University of Alabama are working to change that. The administrators at The University of Alabama take the flu season seriously. They actually put on a flu shot clinic for students on the Quad last month, and they also have something similar planned for patients at the University Medical Center in about a week from now.

Jeff Flake was confronted in the elevator of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. (Ronald J. New Orleans Publicly Unveiling Slave Market Tour App

The city of New Orleans has unveiled a smartphone app tour of sites involved in the slave trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, including the pre-Civil War years during which the city was the nation’s largest slave market … The city’s Tricentennial Commission reached out to Erin Greenwald, then curator at the Historic New Orleans Commission, and historian Joshua Rothman of the University of Alabama, after they wrote an opinion piece in 2016 “calling out New Orleans for being behind other southern cities” in recognizing “difficult history,” Greenwald said.

Honors College receives recognition for work in Marion

A few years ago, Marion was a small town with seemingly little interest in the appearance of the community. Now, thanks to the University of Alabama Honors College and Main Street Marion, they have found a sense of hope. This year marks 10 years of the 57 Miles Program. The program works through the university fellows experience to partner with Perry County.

UA students provide preschool vision screenings

University of Alabama work-study students conducted a vision screening at Flatwoods Elementary school on Sept. 24. The students used high-tech cameras to screen a class of 36 preschoolers for a wide range of vision problems, from signs of poor eyesight to more significant eye conditions, such as amblyopia or cataracts.

Craig Carter of Lugoff, was among the 61 cadets named to the Citadel’s South Carolina Corps of Cadets President’s List for the 2018 spring semester … The University of Alabama awarded some 1,342 degrees during its summer commencement. Among the graduates were Amelia Kimber and Minh Quan, both of Elgin.

Student group tackles clothing campaign

Amber Chan and the other members of her organization are trying to make a change on campus. Chan is the president of Students for Fair Labor (SFL), a group that promotes awareness of workers’ rights violations and injustice, especially pertaining to the manufacture of university apparel.

Students to learn about research opportunities at ‘Pizza with Professors’

For anyone who is interested in research or learning how to get involved in research, the office for undergraduate research will be hosting an event where students can enjoy free pizza and listen to eight faculty members discuss their research in areas such as biology, exercise science, communication, criminal justice, geography and computer science.

General interest, business career fair to provide networking opportunities

WHO: The University of Alabama Career Center is hosting this event. All UA students are welcome to attend. WHAT: A general interest and business career fair for students to interact, network and discuss potential internship or full-time job offers with over 200 employers. The attire is business professional.

Kickoff time set for University of Alabama homecoming
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 1
Kickoff for the University of Alabama’s homecoming game has been set for 6 p.m. Oct. 13, according to the Southeastern Conference. UA will face the University of Missouri Tigers at Bryant-Denny Stadium. ESPN will televise the game. The theme of this year’s homecoming at the Capstone is “Excellence Lights the Crimson Flame.” The homecoming pep rally and bonfire will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 12. The homecoming parade will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 13 in downtown Tuscaloosa.
