Confederate monuments stir emotions, but ‘generally not a voting issue’ in Alabama

Kay Ivey … “At the time Governor Ivey ran those campaign ads touting her support for (Confederate monuments), she was in the midst of her primary campaign,” said Richard Fording, political science professor at the University of Alabama.

Second NASA space telescope is disabled after unexplained problem

New Orleans publicly unveiling slave market tour app

The city of New Orleans has unveiled a smartphone app tour of sites involved in the slave trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, including the pre-Civil War years during which the city was the nation’s largest slave market … The city’s Tricentennial Commission reached out to Erin Greenwald, then curator at the Historic New Orleans Commission, and historian Joshua Rothman of the University of Alabama, after they wrote an opinion piece in 2016 “calling out New Orleans for being behind other southern cities” in recognizing “difficult history,” Greenwald said.

Bryant Museum celebrates 30 years of chronicling Alabama sports history

In the archives of the Paul W. Bryant Museum is a letter from Nov. 23, 1926. To Taylor Watson, curator at the museum, the letter is very telling of the importance of college football in Alabama and why the museum tries to capture its history in the state.

University of Alabama athletes to host Halloween event

The University of Alabama Athletics Department’s 16th annual Halloween Extravaganza will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility adjacent to Coleman Coliseum. The event is open to children 13 and younger and their families. Admission is free. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.

Co-ops give engineering students ‘real-world application’

For students like Alexandra Andreen, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, the Cooperative Education Program, or co-op, provided her with distinct professional experience not offered by any other program. “I have seen myself develop both professionally and personally with each term,” Andreen said. “Now I feel significantly more prepared to be an engineer than I did when I started my co-op.”
