‘I wasn’t going anywhere’: On land of former slaves, a sturdy home gives shelter from the storm

The modest one-story brick house on Old U.S. Road meant more to Leroy Wilson and his family than a roof over their heads. . . . . “We live on the land where our ancestors were once chattel,” said his son, Lamar, who has traced their ancestry to the 1840s . “That’s why they won’t leave. They elected to stay largely because of that lineage.” . . . Lamar, an assistant professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, said he dismissed class around 5 p.m. Wednesday after getting a text from his sister describing the devastation in his hometown and he began making frantic telephone calls to his relatives. He knew they would not leave their land.

America’s Warrior Partnership Expanding Veteran Suicide Prevention Study to New Communities

America’s Warrior Partnership today announced it is accepting proposals from local nonprofits and government groups to participate in Operation Deep Dive, a community-based veteran suicide prevention study led by America’s Warrior Partnership and University of Alabama researchers with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.

How card offices are promoting Mobile Credential

Blackboard’s Mobile Credential on Apple devices has been available to students at launch campuses for nearly two weeks now. While exact enrollment data isn’t yet available, it’s safe to assume that things are moving in a positive direction. Key to getting students involved with Mobile Credential, however, will be informative marketing material. All three of the launch campuses, the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, and Duke University, have provided dedicated informational resources to its campus communities to aid in the enrollment process.

Obama stays away, as his endorsement is ‘kryptonite’ in Alabama

Former President Barack Obama’s endorsements so far this campaign season include Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor in Florida and Georgia and about a half dozen congressional hopefuls in Texas … “Like the national Democratic Party, I suspect that Obama would prefer not to waste his endorsements on candidates that have virtually no chance of winning,” said Richard Fording, a political science professor at the University of Alabama.

Herald-Argus (La Porte, Indiana) – Oct. 11
Alex Russell Deutscher, of Michigan City, was named to The University of Alabama Dean’s List for summer 2018. A total of 493 students enrolled during the 2018 summer termat UA were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 or above or the President’s List with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s).

UA prepares for Homecoming

If you haven’t heard, its homecoming week in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama. And a huge part of the homecoming celebration includes the annual bon fire on the quad. There are hundreds of wooden pallets that are stacked up. ROTC students keeping an eye on things until Friday night. Thousands of Crimson Tide fans are expected to arrive in Tuscaloosa this weekend to watch the Tide take on Missouri on Saturday.

University of Alabama athletes to host Halloween event
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 11
The University of Alabama Athletics Department’s 16th annual Halloween Extravaganza will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility adjacent to Coleman Coliseum. The event is open to children 13 and younger and their families. Admission is free. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.
