The University of Alabama will recognize UA’s first women students by dedicating an on-campus park in their honor on Friday, Oct. 12.

1893 Park will be located east of Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering on Hackberry Lane.

The UA Board of Trustees passed a resolution in April recommending that Hackberry Park be renamed 1893 Park to commemorate the year Anna Adams and Bessie Parker enrolled at the University. The park dedication is part of UA’s 125 Years of Women celebration.

“This has been a project that the 125 Years of Women committee is excited to see come together as it will be an opportunity to have a lasting legacy commemorating this milestone year,” said Dr. Mary Lee Caldwell, chair of the 125 Years of Women committee.

A ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday. Members of the administration, faculty and student body will provide brief remarks. The park is located east of Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering on Hackberry Lane.

“The park will continue to be developed through landscaping and beautification projects and serve as a place to honor the first women who enrolled and all women who have been part of the UA community,” said Caldwell.
