RESEARCH

RESEARCHER TO PRESENT HUMAN TRAFFICKING DATA AT CONFERENCE – Christian Lim, a researcher in UA’s School of Social Work, will present early findings from UA’s $1.3 million DOJ grant to combat human trafficking in Alabama at a Sept. 17 conference in Birmingham. Lim will speak during the human trafficking session, from 1-5 p.m., at the annual Birmingham Civil Rights Institute-FBI conference hosted at the Institute. Lim says preliminary findings indicate there are, on average, about 5,008 people being sex trafficked in and through the state each month, and authorities recovered or helped 617 of them in 2017 — about 1 percent of the estimated number of victims. STUDENTS RECEIVING ANTI-BULLYING, SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING – More than 20 students in the collaborative teacher education program at UA are getting a head-start on the state’s mandated teacher training for anti-bullying and suicide prevention. A pilot training program at UA provides two classes worth of video and interactive training and testing to help future special educators notice risk-factors for bullying and suicide. UA will hold anti-bullying training for the students Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 1-3 p.m. in Graves Hall, room 3. Media are invited to attend, and faculty/students will be available for interviews at 12:45 p.m. While school districts provide this training to its teachers, faculty at UA believe instilling the information now gives students an important head-start for their future classroom management. MAKING NEWS

PROFESSOR AVAILABLE TO DISCUSS JOURNALISM STANDARDS – In recent weeks, two print journalism standard-bearers, The New York Times and legendary reporter Bob Woodward, printed material critical of President Donald Trump stemming from anonymous sources. What does this mean for the typical standard of publishing on-the-record sources? Will these recent atypical approaches become a growing trend? Dr. Chris Roberts, a UA associate professor of journalism who has been on the board of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and helped revise the Society of Professional Journalists’ code of ethics in 2014, offers his expertise on the subject. For more information, contact Jamon Smith, UA Strategic Communications, jamon.smith@ua.edu or 205-348-4956, or contact Roberts directly at croberts@ua.edu, 205-246-6656
