JOB SKILLS TRAINING – Free job skills and financial literacy training sessions are available to West Alabama adults, including veterans, and teens through UA’s business college. Culverhouse LIFT, or Learning Initiative and Financial Training, will begin classes for its fall term Monday, Sept. 10. Registration for the fall 2018 session is open until 5 p.m. Sept. 10. Sponsored by the Culverhouse College of Business and the Culverhouse School of Accountancy, LIFT’s sessions include: computer skills, bookkeeping, GED classes and professional development. Created in 2014, LIFT uses student volunteers from within the business college to work with community participants in a classroom setting. UA TO HOST COLLEGE FAIR FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIESPost-secondary education opportunities are growing for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and a new summit at UA aims to increase awareness of the programs across the state. Four public universities and one private school will participate Sept. 14 in Alabama’s College Prep Summit, a college fair at UA for individuals interested in attending a non-traditional college program. RISE CENTER HOSTS BUY FOR RISE FUNDRAISERUA’s RISE Center will host its annual Buy for RISE fundraiser Sept. 14-15. The two-day event will feature new items offered at deep discounts from dozens of local retailers. A preview night and silent auction will take place at the RISE Center, located at 600 Johnny Stallings Drive, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 14. Tickets will be available in advance for $10 and at the door for $15, and they can be purchased at the RISE Center. Admission to the general sale Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. is free. EXPERT TO GIVE ‘APOCALYPSE ILLUMINATED’ LECTURE Dr. Richard K. Emmerson, dean emeritus of the School of Liberal Arts at Manhattan College, will provide artistic insight into the imagery of the book of the apocalypse, also known as the biblical book of Revelation, during a public lecture, “Apocalypse Illuminated,” Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in 205 Smith Hall. MEDIEVAL MEDLEY – UA’s Improbable Fictions group presents a staged reading of a trio of medieval plays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Gorgas Library. The first reading, weather permitting, will take place on the Gorgas Library steps; other plays will be presented in 205 Gorgas. The Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies presents the event. BEAM ME UP, DARWIN — Dr. Mohamed Noor, of Duke University, will present the lecture, Using ‘Star Trek’ to Understand Evolution: How Could There Have Been So Many Alien Species?, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in 1011 North Lawn Hall. A lifelong Trekker, Noor has been using “Star Trek” as a basis for teaching about principles of genetics and evolution both in the classroom and at conventions such as DragonCon in Atlanta. His book, “Live Long and Evolve: What ‘Star Trek’ Can Teach Us about Evolution, Genetics, and Life on Other Worlds,” will be released this week.
