MEDIA AVAILABILITY TUESDAY ON GAME DAY LOGISTICS — Nick Frenz, UA assistant director of transportation event management, will be available to talk to media members about this year’s football Gamedays, Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Campus Drive Parking Deck (451 Campus Drive, Tuscaloosa). Frenz can discuss such topics as tailgating on the Quad, the family-friendly tailgate area, UA’s clear bag policy, rideshare policy and parking. ‘ALL OF US’ RESEARCH PROGRAM AT UA ENROLLING PARTICIPANTS – UA’s College of Community Health Sciences has received additional funding to work on the “All of Us” Research Program, a landmark effort to advance individualized care, prevention and treatment for people of all backgrounds. The College’s Institute of Rural Health Research was awarded $600,000 to support the initial enrollment of participants in the National Institutes of Health initiative. The goal of the All of Us Research Program is to enroll 1 million or more people nationwide. Information will be collected over the program’s 10-year course. WALK-THRU METAL DETECTORS TO BE DEMONSTRATED FOR MEDIA FRIDAY – Media members are invited to see a demonstration of the walk through metal detectors being implemented at Bryant-Denny Stadium for the 2018 football season, Friday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. Ralph Clayton, UA assistant vice president for public safety, will be available for interviews about the detectors. Media should park in the surface lot on the northwest apron of the stadium at the intersection of Wallace Wade Avenue and 8th Street. JOB SKILLS TRAINING – Free job skills and financial literacy training sessions will soon be available to West Alabama adults, including veterans, and teens through UA’s business college. Culverhouse LIFT, or Learning Initiative and Financial Training, will begin classes for its fall term Monday, Sept. 10. Registration for the fall 2018 session is open until 5 p.m. that day. Sponsored by the Culverhouse College of Business and the Culverhouse School of Accountancy, LIFT’s sessions include: computer skills, bookkeeping, GED classes and professional development. Created in 2014, LIFT uses student volunteers from within the business college to work with community participants in a classroom setting. ADVISORY BOARD TO HOST GALA IN BIRMINGHAM – The UA Division of Community Affairs’ board of advisors will host a “Coming Back, Giving Back” gala Monday, Sept. 10, at the Harbert Center in Birmingham. A social will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The purpose is to increase awareness of the board and to raise additional funds for its work in support of UA students. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin will welcome attendees.Terri Brewer, communications director for Tuscaloosa County Schools, will serve as emcee, and guests will hear a performance by Grammy-award-winning singer/songwriter Sebastian Kole. UA TO HOST COLLEGE FAIR FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES – Post-secondary education opportunities are growing for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and a new summit at UA aims to increase awareness of the programs across the state. Four public universities and one private school will participate in Alabama’s College Prep Summit, a college fair for individuals interested in attending a non-traditional college program, Sept. 14 at UA. The summit, created by UA’s CrossingPoints program, is the first of its kind in the state. The summit is free to attend and will be held in the Ferguson Center ballroom from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CrossingPoints leaders and select graduates are available for interviews this week.
