A recent article in the Journal Inquirer reminds us that a monument is in the eye of the beholder, that one person’s hero may be another person’s villain. With the Columbus Day holiday edging nearer, that’s a good reminder … “By taking monuments down or hiding them away, we facilitate forgetting,” said a University of Alabama law professor, Alfred Brophy. “There is value in owning our history.”

Data shows that women are rarely behind active shootings, making Thursday’s massacre at a drugstore distribution center unusual … But in general, there are fewer female shooters when it comes to firearm homicides, Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama, told CNN in April. FBI data from 2016 showed that 7.6% of offenders who committed murder were female.

Council approves furnishings, equipment purchase for The Edge

As moving day for The Edge business incubator draws near, the Tuscaloosa City Council is spending more than $500,000 to outfit it with new furnishings and equipment … The Edge Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation began in 2012 in a 9,000-square foot building on 22nd Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa. Its purpose, as a partnership among the University of Alabama, the city of Tuscaloosa and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, was to foster and grow new business and industry within the region.

Maryland shooting suspect’s favorite quote: ‘An eye for an eye’

The Maryland shooting suspect described herself on Facebook as a “quiet” person with a “to myself type of personality” — but also proclaimed that her favorite Bible verse was “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” … “If you look at mass shootings in the United States that have killed eight or more people, they’re all done by men,” Adam Lankford, a criminologist at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, told The Post.

Alpha Kappa Alpha raises $1 million in one day for HBCUs

To Imani Daffin, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national campaign to raise $1 million in one day is a brave and progressive way to support historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). It is a campaign she could benefit from as she plans on attending an HBCU after her time at The University of Alabama. “These ladies used their resources to achieve and pursue good,” said Daffin, a senior majoring in public relations and history.

UA graduates start LGBTQ Alumni Association

After hearing his friends talking about their university’s LGBTQ+ alumni groups, Will Thomas wondered why his alma mater, The University of Alabama, did not have one. So, he decided to change that. Thomas, a UA alumnus currently living in Washington, D.C., began working with fellow UA alumnus Chase Sanders to create a group for LGBTQ+ alumni by sending out surveys to other University graduates across the country in June. They received over 200 responses.
