Hurricane rating system fails to account for deadly rain

When meteorologists downgraded Hurricane Florence from a powerful Category 4 storm to a Category 2 and then a Category 1, Wayne Mills figured he could stick it out … University of Alabama’s Jason Senkbeil studies the intersection of meteorology and social science and is working on two different new hurricane scales using letters to describe danger or potential damage. Florence would be an “Rs” for rainfall and storm surge. The trouble, said Senkbeil, is “rainfall just doesn’t sound threatening.”

Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra tunes up for ‘bold’ season

The TSO chose the over-arching theme of “Malice and Majesty” for its 2018-19 season, which opens at 7 Monday night with “Into the Beyond,” featuring Tuscaloosa’s own Joshua Williams, winner of the International Horn Competition of America, as soloist on Mozart’s “Concerto for Horn No. 4.” Tonight’s performance, conducted by Flatt, will also include Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony,” and Liszt’s “Les Préludes.” …Tonight’s performance opens with the “collar-grabbing” Beethoven, a story of courage and rousing strength. It’ll be followed by the Mozart, featuring Williams, who while still a doctoral student at the University of Alabama took top prize at the international competition last September.

Bob Baumhower and Eddie Lowe, two former University of Alabama football players, have earned the Paul W. Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award. The award is designed to honor former athletes who have achieved outstanding accomplishments after leaving UA. The criteria for the award include character, contributions to society, professional achievement and service. Nominations were made by UA alumni, faculty, administrators and athletic coaches.
