UA students offer training to the community through LIFT program

University of Alabama students step up to help others in their community learn more about computers, smart phones and how to better handle their finances. Students in the business school at the University of Alabama are sharing their knowledge with others around the Tuscaloosa area. Today, they started working with teens, veterans and the elderly who want to be more financial and tech savvy. I spoke to students helping out at Tuscaloosa’s McAbee Center.

HURRICANE FLORENCE MAY BE BREAKING RECORDS
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Sept. 10
We’re only halfway through the 2018 hurricane season, but Hurricane Florence heading for the Carolinas and Virginia could be a record-breaker. Hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30, and so far there haven’t been any major hurricane events. Category 4 Hurricane Florence is poised to strike the Carolinas as early as late Wednesday or early Thursday … University of Alabama Associate Professor of Geography Jason Senkbeil said this hurricane may be a record-breaker. “This one may eclipse rainfall records,” he said. “Over North Carolina it may dump 12 to 24 inches of rainfall.”

Three is Miss America Pageant with ties to UA

If you’re wondering how Miss Alabama did, Callie Walker finished in the top 10. She’s from Birmingham and is currently a student at the University of AlabamaMiss Pennsylvania Kayla Repasky and Miss District of Columbia Allison Farris are also UA students.

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA LOOKING FOR ‘ALL OF US’ STUDY PARTICIPANTS

University of Alabama researchers are helping a national effort working on changing the way the U.S. studies medicine. The largest study of its kind from the National Institute of Health has brought its All of Us research program to Tuscaloosa.

Study shows Alabama’s economic growth rate increased 70 percent this year
Yellowhammer News – Sept. 10
The Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business said the state’s economy will end this year with a 2.2 percent growth rate, a massive 70 percent increase compared to 2017.

UA pediatrician talks about preparing for flu season
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Sept. 7
The flu can be especially deadly for young children and senior citizens. Children below the age of six months and people with prior issues such as heart attacks or strokes have a higher risk of having complications from the flu. Dr. Brian Gannon, UA assistant professor of pediatrics, says that more than 170 children died from the flu in 2017.

May I finish? The case against interrupting

Recently, a colleague called to ask me for my “feedback and insight” on a case. He then proceeded to interrupt me every time I opened my mouth. Eventually, he finished and, apparently satisfied with his own “feedback and insight,” he ended the phone call and thanked me for my help … Two studies that examined transcripts of arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court—one conducted by the University of Alabama and one by the Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law—concluded that women are interrupted at a vastly higher rate than their male counterparts and are allowed far less speaking time.

Alabama Birding Trails
 Great Days Outdoors – Sept. 10
Although temperatures can get a bit toasty, summer is a great time to enjoy observing Alabama’s more than 430 bird species. From bald eagles in Guntersville State Park, to rose-breasted grosbeaks on Dauphin Island, the state teams with not only a diversity of birds, but beautiful locations for observation … Joe Watts, a consultant with the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development, said the state’s system of trails was completed in 2013 and offers birders a variety of habitats and opportunities for seeing unique species throughout the year.

September is suicide prevention month
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Sept. 10
The University of Alabama recently made it easier for students to find mental health resources. There is a kiosk at the Ferguson Student Center, where students can put in their symptoms and find out what resources around campus can help them most. If you or a loved one ever feels suicidal, clinical psychologist and assistant director of the University of Alabama Counseling Center, Dr. Greg Vanderwal, says the biggest thing you can do is make sure they’re connected.

Mayor of Phenix City receives Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award
WTVM (Columbus, Georgia) – Sept. 10
The mayor of Phenix City was honored for his accomplishments as a University of Alabama alumnus. Mayor Eddie Lowe received the Paul. W. Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award at the Arkansas versus Alabama game in Tuscaloosa over the weekend.
