The University of Alabama School of Law announced today a $26.5 million donation from prominent business executive and attorney Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. To honor Culverhouse’s impact and generosity, the UA School of Law will now bear his name, becoming the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law at The University of Alabama.

UA students to screen preschool children for vision problems

The screening will be held at Flatwoods Elementary in Northport on Monday, Sept. 24. University of Alabama students will use high-tech cameras to screen for poor vision and significant eye problems among a group of preschool children. The screenings begin at 9 a.m.

An interesting report recently emerged from the University of Alabama’s Institute for Social Science Research. The Institute performed an evaluation of the Alabama Accountability Act, the 2013 law that established a mechanism to compensate parents of children zoned for “failing” public schools with $3,500 tax credits to help offset the cost of sending those children to private school.

Apple : city, OU planning ‘Lose Your Wallet’ event in Norman

In June, Apple announced it was partnering with Blackboard to include Sooner Cards in the Apple Wallet, allowing students to use their iPhones or Apple Watches to access campus buildings, check out library books or pay for food, rather than a physical card. The University of Oklahoma was one of three schools to debut this feature in the fall semester, including the University of Alabama and Duke University, with three others on the way. The capability was added to Apple devices through IOS 12, which became available on Sept. 17.

UA has Family-friendly tailgate

Saturday UA Gameday sponsored a new tailgate spot at the corner of Hackberry Lane and Campus Drive. This tailgate combined all the fun of Gameday with an atmosphere conducive for families. One mom says this is the second year for her and her son. Food vendors, face painting, and free inflatables were available for children.
