‘Community Without Borders’ Theme of Hispanic Latino Heritage Month

“A Community Without  Borders” is the theme for the 2018 Hispanic Latino Heritage Month at The University of Alabama. Highlights for the event, which ends Oct. 16, includes lectures, campus dialogues and activities.

In “Charlas con Café,” UA community members may drop in to Starbucks at Ferguson Student Center and practice their Spanish. Times are from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesdays on Sept. 19 and 26 as well as Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 31. Co-sponsors are the Spanish Club and UA’s Spanish department.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, a campus dialogue will address “Hispanic/Latinx Experience at the Capstone” and include a poetry performance by Mercedez Holtry. The event is at 1 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Ferguson Student Center. Co-sponsors are UA Crossroads, Office of Student Involvement, Ferguson Student Center and Alabama Student Association for Poetry.

Another campus dialogue on “Inclusion in the Workplace” will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Great Hall of the Ferguson Student Center. Co-sponsors are UA Crossroads, Office of Student Involvement, Ferguson Student Center and the Career Center.

The 2018 Rose Gladney Lecture will feature Dr. Monica Muñoz Martinez of Brown University in a talk titled “The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas.” The lecture is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in 205 Gorgas Library; the sponsor is the department of American studies.

The Hispanic-Latino Association Heritage Ball is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom. Co-sponsors are the Hispanic-Latino Association, Blend, Spanish Club, URGE, Regions Bank and the Caribbean Students Association.
