MELD Manufacturing Receives Grant for Research in Recycling Battlefield Scrap Metal to 3D Print Parts in Combat Theatre

This spring, air data and flow measurement systems and instruments producer Aeroprobe Corporation announced the launch of its new subsidiary, MELD Manufacturing Corporation, for the purposes of continuing the work on its novel Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing method … Now, more good things are coming for MELD. The company is collaborating with the Army Research Lab (ARL) and the University of Alabama, and the three just received grant funding from the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP).

Sayler Tatom cares about Big Sky, which means she cares about snow, plants and the environment. Originally from Dallas, Tatom moved to Big Sky at about 10 years of age and graduated from Lone Peak High School in 2017 … While Tatom is currently enrolled in the environmental engineering and dance programs at the University of Alabama and will begin her sophomore year this August, she returned to Big Sky this summer in order to help the community reduce its environmental profile.

Pre-K program in Tuscaloosa has proven success

The Pre-K program in Tuscaloosa has expanded over the years, and now they have the numbers to prove its success. A study from The University of Alabama’s College of Human Environmental Sciences showed 80 percent of the 393 students tested in the Tuscaloosa City Schools system were prepared and ready for kindergarten. The study measured the students’ ability to interact and learn together with other students in a class setting.

Kids taking part in dangerous social media challenge

It’s called Momo, and it’s found here in the What’sApp. And if you see it on your child’s phone, you need to talk to them about this game. Once your child signs on, they are encouraged to add contacts associate with the game. The controller sends violent pictures to your child, and claims they know personal information about them, and they use that to threaten them to perform challenges, even videotaping themselves committing suicide. Big tech’s first steps to fight addiction fail to impress

New features that Silicon Valley giants are introducing to help people manage the time they spend on smartphones may do little to reduce addiction, especially on social media, according to researchers who study the subject, writes David Ingram for NBC News … Facebook, Instagram, Apple and Google could speed along adoption of the tools simply because the companies are so large, said Elliot Panek, a University of Alabama communications professor who studies social media addiction.

Honda Alabama opens new logistics buildings in $85 million project

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama has officially opened its new logistics buildings, an $85 million project that further deepens the automaker’s roots in Talladega County, as well as its significant imprint on the state’s economy … A University of Alabama analysis shows HMA has an estimated $6.8 billion economic impact in the state.

Dothan’s Kate Fountain, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, has completed an internship in the office of U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, the senator’s office announced recently.

College classes set to resume

Students at the University of Alabama-Huntsville start next week on August 15th along with Alabama A&M students that start on August 16. Auburn classes begin on August 20th. The University of Alabama and the University of North Alabama start back up on August 22nd.
