Researchers examining Parkinson’s resilience

Diseases have a spectrum of risk, even those partially embedded in genes such as Parkinson’s disease. Less than 10 percent of those with Parkinson’s can pinpoint their genes as the only culprit, while scores of others with some genetic markers are diagnosed with the disease. Still others have markers to develop Parkinson’s, but do not. Why? Research underway at The University of Alabama, supported by the National Institutes of Health, hopes to identify factors and methods through which individuals are either resilient or susceptible to the neurodegeneration in the brain as part of the disease.

Walt Maddox announces public safety plan
Alabama Today – Aug. 2
On Thursday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox announced his plan to improve public safety throughout Alabama. Since 2010 roadway fatalities in our the Yellowhammer State have risen a whopping 155%, while at the same time Alabama has dropped State Trooper staffing to a third of its recommended level. According to the State Troopers Association, fewer than 300 Troopers patrol the entire state, a number that should be closer to 750 according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and should be more than 1000 according to the Center for Advanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama.

Chinese students take extended stay in Tuscaloosa

During the past two weeks, 40 students who were thousands of miles away from home spent time in Tuscaloosa learning about American culture. On Thursday, the group of Chinese students, ages 9 through 12, gathered at the Tuscaloosa Public Library to celebrate their visit and thank their host families for their hospitality … The students all came from Kunming, a city in China’s Yunnan province in the southwest part of China. While in Tuscaloosa, they toured the University of Alabama, the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant in Vance and more.

‘Ambassadors of the Future’ visit universities in US

The students participating in the “Ambassadors of the Future” programme, have visited prestigious universities in the United States and Singapore, to get first hand knowledge of their academic performance, specialisations, and future-oriented plans … Their visit included Harvard University, the University of Alabama, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Johns Hopkins University, which specialise in science, as well as the National University of Singapore. These universities are also influential to the future of modern sciences.
