NSF invests in research to help disrupt operations of illicit supply networks
National Science Foundation – Aug. 28
Networks that illegally traffic in everything from people and opioids to human organs and nuclear material pose threats to U.S. health, prosperity and security. Nine new awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will advance the scientific understanding of how such illicit supply networks function — and how to dismantle them … Below are the nine new projects being funded, along with the principal investigators and awardee organizations … Anticipatory interdiction in narco-trafficking networks, Nicholas Magliocca, University of Alabama.

New $6M water research grant could protect lives, property of Alabamians
Alabama Today – Aug. 28
Alabamians lives and property may soon be better protected thanks to a new federal grant to help improve the nation’s water prediction capabilities and forecasts. Alabama U.S. Senator Richard Shelby on Tuesday announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has granted $6 million for water prediction research efforts at the University of Alabama (UA) in partnership with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

US Army Research Lab Scientists Creating Atomic-Level 3D Reconstructions of Specimens

The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is responsible for plenty of innovative 3D printing research over the years, such as 3D printing drones and working with recycled 3D printing material … Dr. Hornbuckle himself developed the probe during his time as a graduate student at the University of Alabama. Army scientists and other researchers now ask him for his help in characterizing samples, and use APT technology to determine which atoms are located where in a material.

Tibbetts case exposes worst-kept secret in US

Dane Lang, a co-owner of Yarrabee Farms outside Brooklyn, Iowa, stood outside his family farm last week and lamented that he had employed the undocumented immigrant charged in the slaying of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts … Alabama’s immigration law pushed up to 80,000 workers out of the state, according to a study by the University of Alabama.

Mobley Jr., an assistant professor of higher education at the University of Alabama who studies HBCUs.

Depressed children 6 times more likely to have skill deficits, MU study finds

Supervisors Fund New Position to Work on Santa Barbara County Emergency Preparedness, Outreach

The Board of Supervisors funded a community outreach liaison on Tuesday, and the new position will work on Santa Barbara County emergency-preparedness efforts … There is another survey asking for input on emergency messaging for the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 Montecito debris flow, which is being conducted by the University of Alabama’s Center for Advanced Public Safety in partnership with the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard office.

The UA Dean’s and President’s lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.
