One year ago, on August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck Texas – the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005. Harvey dumped record-breaking rain and flooded hundreds of thousands of homes in and around Houston. It caused some US$125 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history. Mollie Tibbetts case exposes farms’ worst-kept secret: hiring undocumented immigrants

Dane Lang, a co-owner of Yarrabee Farms outside of Brooklyn, Iowa, stood outside his family farm this week and lamented that he had employed the undocumented immigrant charged in the murder of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts … Alabama’s immigration law pushed up to 80,000 workers out of the state, according to a study conducted by the University of Alabama.

Russia blamed for anti-vaccination memes

The report shows researchers found, “Russian trolls promoted discord on the vaccine issue.” A University of Alabama study found that between 2009 and 2015, about half of all tweets about vaccines were negative. The study found that the phony accounts also sometimes took pro-vaccination positions to get Americans arguing with each other and increase division.

UA student receives award for community service

Speaking of students, this afternoon, a University of Alabama student was recognized for her community service. Congressman Aderholt presented the Bronze Award to Sarah Laing. This award was created in 1979 to honor community service by young Americans.

Report says 1,200 bridges in Alabama are structurally deficient

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association released a report earlier this year on deficient bridges in the United States, saying 1,200 bridges in Alabama are structurally deficient … Shashi Nambisan, executive director of the Alabama Transportation Institute at the University of Alabama, told the Alabama Newscenter, that statistics show the state’s infrastructure needs action now.
