Hewson Stock gift to University of Alabama is Largest in UA History

The University of Alabama has received a big donation, $15 million to be exact. The gift from Lockheed Martin president Marillyn Hewson and her husband is the largest one time financial contribution UA has ever received.

Andrew Martin to perform at Edinburgh festival

The Yonder Contemporary Dance Company, a collective in The University of Alabama’s department of theatre and dance, will present a 50-minute concert titled “IRL” during the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The performances will run August 4-10. Among the students in the company is Andrew Martin of Irmo … Yonder’s “IRL” involves 15 dance majors, overseen by Sarah M. Barry, associate professor of dance. They are collaborating with five student composers from UA’s School of Music, who are overseen by Dr. Amir Zaheri, assistant professor of composition.

To mark World Lung Cancer Day on August 1st, Cancer Network spoke with Dr. Alan Blum, Professor and Gerald Leon Wallace, MD, Endowed Chair of Family Medicine at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he also directs the University’s Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society, which he founded in 1999. Dr. Blum is an expert on the history of tobacco use, tobacco industry marketing, and the anti-smoking movement. He is a renowned pioneer in creative physician-led public advocacy initiatives to counter the promotion of unhealthy products and lethal lifestyles.

Approval for Attorney General Sessions has tanked amid Trump’s attacks, poll suggests

Once so popular that he ran unopposed for re-election to the Senate in both the Republican primary and in the general election, Attorney General Jeff Sessions now finds himself under fire from all sides. Democrats across the country never much cared for him, and now Republicans hold him in low standing, as well … William Stewart, a political scientist at the University of Alabama, said he is not surprised by the poll results. “I can imagine, because the president hasn’t spoken very favorably about his attorney general,” he said.
 
HHS seniors attend Alabama Girls State

Homewood High School seniors Mary Eliza Beaumont and Audrey Nabors attended Alabama Girls State over the summer. The civic engagement and education program, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary, was held at the University of Alabama in June.

Higher Education Grants or Gifts of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education … The University of Alabama received a four-year, $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program for graduate students in nursing and to support the university’s Nurse Faculty Loan Program.
