UA Study says Alabama needs more State Troopers; State plans to hire more

Researchers examining Parkinson’s resilience

Diseases have a spectrum of risk, even those partially embedded in genes such as Parkinson’s disease. Less than 10 percent of those with Parkinson’s can pinpoint their genes as the only culprit, while scores of others with some genetic markers are diagnosed with the disease. Still others have markers to develop Parkinson’s, but do not. Why? Research underway at The University of Alabama, supported by the National Institutes of Health, hopes to identify factors and methods through which individuals are either resilient or susceptible to the neurodegeneration in the brain as part of the disease.

Hurting Pets to Get Attention and Drugs: A Growing Problem

More people intentionally hurt their pets than you probably think. For example, the 404 veterinarians who participated in a survey conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) said they had treated “non-accidental physical injuries” in 225 dogs and 168 cats … But, as described by researchers James Oxley and Marc Feldman in an article in the journal Companion Animal, sometimes the victim is a pet. Take a case published in the American Journal of Psychiatry by Dr. Feldman, a psychiatrist at the University of Alabama.

Number of students in pre-K growing in city, county schools

As more children start school early through Tuscaloosa city and county’s pre-kindergarten program, the number of children on the waiting list for those classes is also growing … The effects of both school systems’ pre-K programs has been the subject of studies by researchers at the University of Alabama. Over the course of the 2017-18 school year, UA researchers with the College of Human Environmental Sciences tracked the progress pre-K students from their first days in the program to their last, measuring everything from academic to emotional growth.

LEND A HAND: UA program aims to boost rural health care

Primary care nurse practitioners will train to work in rural and underserved areas across the state under a new program in the University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing. A news release from UA states that the BAMA-Care program will help relieve one of the top health concerns in Alabama: access to medical care.
Alabama port looks to add to its $22.4 billion economic impact with expansions

The Alabama State Port Authority is one of the largest economic engines for the state and wants to build on its $22.4 billion economic impact. The 4,000 acres that make up the state docks have multiple complexes that handle everything from auto parts to coal and from poultry to pine … According to an economic impact study from the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research, the port is responsible for 134,608 direct and indirect jobs in the state with a direct and indirect tax impact of $486.9 million.

UA announces Crimson Standard Campaign

The University of Alabama has announced a $600 million project to give some of its facilities a face-lift. It’s all part of a program called the crimson standard. This 10-year fundraising plan will pay for renovations to Bryant-Denny stadium and the Coleman Coliseum.

The Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce will host its quarterly luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens … From there, Bonnin made a bigger name for herself at Louisiana State University as vice president for strategic communication in 2014 before coming to the University of Alabama in 2015 to fulfill the same role.

Think about the people you know who are high in narcissism. Are they particularly polite? Or do they interrupt, take control of the conversation, and focus only on their own needs when in social situations? Who is the first to take a seat at the table? … New research on self-presentation tactics of people high in a version of narcissism suggests not only that they can be rude, but also why they’re rude. University of Alabama’s William Hart and colleagues examined the relationship between the personality traits associated with the so-called “Dark Triad” traits.

Fifty billboards to save America

In view of the mid-term elections in the United States, an important artistic initiative will take shape overseas. Fifty billboards scattered around the country will stimulate political discussion … The two launched a crowdfunding campaign during the first week of June in collaboration with over two hundred museums, universities and cultural associations, such as the University of Alabama, the Detroit Institute of Art and the Brooklyn Museum.
