Find Yourself at Get on Board Day Sept. 4

Get on Board Day helps connect you to organizations, community vendors and departments on campus. While it’s not the only way to get involved and make new friends, it is a great way.

This semester’s GOBD will take place Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 5-9 p.m. and will stretch from the Ferguson plaza to the promenade.

Each organization sets up a display table to provide a snapshot of what the organization is all about; some are interactive and allow you to test out their offerings.

There are hundreds of tables. To get the most from GOBD, explore the entire event. It may be the only time that you can interact with all the organizations available in one day during an organized event.

Three Things to Keep in Mind

1. Academics — Join an organization that will help you gain skills for your chosen profession.

2. Out of the Box — Join an organization that moves you out of your comfort zone. Maybe it is something you have never engaged in or always wanted to try, but just didn’t.

3. You are You — Join an organization that speaks to your deep passion or favorite hobby. College is an opportunity to re-invent yourself, but stay grounded in what you love.

Bring Your Questions with You

Learn all you can about organizations that pique your interest. Ask:

  • What are your organization’s major programs and initiatives?
  • How often do you meet as a group?
  • What leadership opportunities are available?
  • What’s the most effective thing your organization has been a part of in the last year?
  • What are your goals for this year?
  • What legacy do you plan to leave at UA or in the surrounding community?

Organization Takeover

After GOBD, student organizations will start contacting you, so be ready to begin narrowing down your decisions fairly soon. If you are still undecided, follow up with Organization Takeover.

At OTO, student organizations provide an annual showcase of first meeting opportunities and a chance for you to connect on a more personal level through hosting a first meeting, a “meet and greet” or an artistic/recreational demonstration. OTO takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 5 and Thursday, Sept. 6 from 5-10 p.m. on the third floor of the Ferguson Student Center.
