Faculty and Staff Accolades for Aug. 20, 2018

Dr. Sherwood Burns-Nader, human development and family studies, received the 2018 Professional Research Award at the Association of Child Life Professionals’ annual conference. The Professional Research Recognition Award honors significant work by a child life specialist and celebrates research initiatives that contribute to theory and practice within the field of child life.

Dr. Ellen Csikai, School of Social Work, co-authored “Social Work Assessment and Outcomes Measurement in Hospice and Palliative Care,” American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2018).

Allison M. Curington, School of Social Work, co-published “Preparing Masters’ Students for Social Work Practice: the Perspective of Field Instructors, Social Work Education (2018).

Paul Horwitz, Law School, has published “Institutional Pluralism and the (Hoped for) Effects of Candor and Integrity in Legal Scholarship,” 101 Marquette Law Review 925-955 (2018).

Dr. Lingyan Kong, human nutrition and hospitality management, received a Ralph E. Powell Junior Faculty Enhancement award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities. ORAU provides funds to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty.

Dr. Jeannine Lawrence, human nutrition and hospitality management, was selected as an SEC Academic Leadership Development Program fellow for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. As part of this program, she will participate in on-campus programming through Leadership U.

Wade MacDonald, art and art history, was featured in the August/September issue of American Craft Magazine. The article focuses on the intersection of color, design and architecture in MacDonald’s ceramic sculpture.

Dr. Su Shin, consumer sciences, received the Richard L. D. Morse Applied Consumer Economics Award at the 2018 American Council on Consumer Interests conference.

Bryce Speed, art and art history, curated the exhibition, “Everywhere and There: Directions in Contemporary Figurative Painting,” in July at Ground Floor Contemporary in Birmingham. The exhibition brings together four different interpretations of figurative painting by nationally and internationally known artists Sam Bornstein, John Dilg, Amy Pleasant and Christina Renfer Vogel.

Darryl Thornton, College of Human Environmental Sciences, was selected for the 2018-2019 Faculty Fellows in Service-Learning Program sponsored by the Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility. As a Faculty Fellow, he will have the opportunity to develop an exemplary service-learning course through a year-long series of topic-specific seminars, individual support, and research assistance from CESR service-learning staff.
