CAMP MARIONUA’s Honors College is collaborating with community partners on a two-week literacy camp in Marion. Camp Marion will focus on developing and enhancing literacy skills through project-based learning. This year’s theme is the town of Marion and learning about communities. Activities include a community scavenger hunt and “tour of Marion” for parents to see their children’s projects. Children in lower elementary grades are eligible to participate in the camp at Francis Marion School. It will take place from 9 a.m. to noon through June 22 and is a collaborative effort of the UA Honors College and its 57 Miles Initiative; Francis Marion School; Renaissance Marion and the First Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa. SWIM TO THE TOP — Swim to the Top is a swimming, physical education and academic enrichment summer camp sponsored by UA’s Division of Community Affairs. This camp works to improve campers’ swim skills and water safety and also emphasizes science, nutrition and literacy in a fun environment. Program instruction is available June 4-28 on Monday-Thursday mornings. Swim to the Top is open to the media. NEW MASTER’S DEGREE — UA’s College of Human Environmental Sciences is changing to meet new needs by adding a Master’s in Public Health program, which will be offered both on campus and by distance. The new program in public health is 42 credits and will be eligible for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health. Its curriculum focuses on health education and promotion. ALABAMA HERITAGE AWARD — State history magazine Alabama Heritage received the Digital History Award in the Large Project Category from the Alabama Historical Association at its annual meeting in Birmingham. The magazine, co-published by UA, has digitized a substantial portion of its articles published since its 1986 debut. The AHA Digital History Award recognizes excellence in projects that contribute to promulgating state and local Alabama history by digital means. Projects are reviewed on their delivery of exceptional and hidden information about Alabama’s past using websites, blogs, social media and other forms of digital media. COMPUTER SCIENCE CAMPS – UA’s computer science department will host a series of summer computer science camps for middle and high school students starting June 18. Students will be taught multiple topics of computer science while learning to program a computer in several contexts. The camps are taught by UA faculty in a manner that encourages self-exploration across multiple projects. The camps are open to the media. LOOKING AHEAD

BLACK PANTHER — The Paul R. Jones Museum will feature a new exhibition, “BAM! Black Panther and the Black Arts Movement in the Paul R. Jones Collection,” beginning Friday, July 6. The exhibition, curated by Emily Bibb and Dr. Wendy Castenell, both of UA, was inspired by the recent blockbuster “Black Panther.” The exhibition will display 30 works, including sculptures in wood and stone as well as photographs. The exhibition is open through Aug. 31.  An opening will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, at the museum. Both are free and open to the public. The Paul R. Jones Museum is at 2308 Sixth St. in downtown Tuscaloosa.
