New UA research shows positive effects of tablets for some kids

The University of Alabama and Children’s Hospital of Alabama team up to study new medical research linking tablet usage to specific kinds of kids. Some kids love to play games and even watch videos on their tablet. We always hear about the negative effects of tablets being too distracting for kids, but what about the positive side of that, a UA researcher explained. “Tablets have become a really good tool because kids like them,” said Dr. Sherwood Burns-Nader UA assistant professor.

Univ. of Alabama students can use ID card on Apple Watch

No more ID cards for University of Alabama students with an Apple Watch or iPhone. Apple said in a statement students will just have to raise their wrist to gain access to places including the library, dorms, and events, pay for snacks, laundry, and dinners around campus, the Tuscaloosa News reported. The software was presented this week as students with an Apple Watch or iPhone can add their ID cards to the wallet for usage this fall.

Proposed US banking fix for marijuana may not open all doors

A proposal in Congress to ease the U.S. ban on marijuana could encourage more banks to do business with cannabis companies, but it appears to fall short of a cure-all for an industry that must operate mainly as a cash business in a credit card world … Even then, risk remains as banks face a range of compliance rules by accepting marijuana-linked money. The Bank Secrecy Act requires that banks know their customers well enough to ensure they are not engaging in money laundering, said Julie A. Hill, a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law.

USDOT announces $2.1B of grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced two major infrastructure allocations, with almost $1.5 billion for potential, discretionary grants through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program and $677 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The smallest project in the running for an INFRA award is construction of a bridge over an existing rail lane at the University of Alabama for approximately $6 million, and the largest is $184 million to the Georgia Department of Transportation to construct 17 miles of express lanes on Georgia State Road 400.

With Blackboard Mobile Credentials, student credentials in Apple Wallet offer secure access to facilities, residence halls and more, as well as payments for dining, laundry, vending and retail, creating a seamless experience while navigating campus … The ability to add student IDs to Wallet will launch with Duke University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Oklahoma this fall.

Malik Dahhan was a recent participant in the 81st American Legion Alabama Boys State. He was a credit to his community and to Homewood High School … Boys State is a leadership program for male students after their junior year of high school. It gives students a hands-on look at how government functions on city, county and state levels. Boys State is held at University of Alabama and is an invitation-only experience.
